The days that followed were a whirlwind of tension, secrecy, and a strange, haunting sense of peace whenever Zayne was near. But something lingered, a tugging at the back of my mind, reminding me of the complexities I had left unresolved. There was Sylus—the other side of this coin, a pull just as strong, his presence a reminder of every choice I'd yet to make.
Despite the undeniable bond I shared with Zayne, Sylus haunted my thoughts. His kiss, unexpected and consuming, had left a mark on me that I couldn't ignore. The memory of it felt as if it pulsed beneath my skin, interwoven with the essence of my Evol. I kept seeing flashes of his intense red gaze, the way he'd pulled me close, that glint of danger in his eyes as he had dared me to resist him. In moments of stillness, when I felt Zayne's hand in mine, I couldn't help but wonder how I could be caught between two such opposing forces.
The Hunter's Association buzzed with activity as I sorted through files on the latest Wanderer sightings. I'd spent the day diving into my work, meeting with colleagues, and gathering intel on any new threats. It had been a relatively uneventful day, and I was feeling a strange sense of peace, like I'd finally started to make sense of the chaos that had become my life.
That was until my phone rang, startling me out of my focus. The number was unknown, and I almost ignored it, thinking it was some spam caller. But, something urged me to pick up.
"Hello?"
"Miss me yet, kitten?" A familiar voice slithered through the line, smooth and cocky.
My heart skipped a beat. "Sylus..." I breathed, thrown off balance.
"Not a call in weeks, that's cruel even for you, kitten," he replied, feigning a hurt tone.
I clenched my jaw, trying to steady my voice. "Sylus, I'm busy right now."
"Oh? Doing what?" His tone held that teasing edge I'd come to associate with him.
"I'm working. I have to go."
He chuckled, a low sound that sent a shiver down my spine. "I know. You look irresistible in your Hunter's uniform."
My eyes widened, and I immediately scanned the room, pulse quickening as I realized he was watching me. I fought to keep my composure, trying to ignore the rising panic in my chest. "Sylus, you can't just... be here. If my boss or any of the team saw me with you—"
"Relax," he interrupted, amusement lacing his voice. "Look to your left."
My heart hammered as I turned, and there he was, sauntering towards me, his phone still pressed to his ear. I couldn't believe it. Panic flared up as he got closer, and I gripped my phone tightly.
"Stop," I hissed, my voice barely above a whisper.
He reached out, letting his fingers brush lightly against mine as he passed. The contact was brief, but it was enough to send a jolt of energy racing through me. I closed my eyes for a second, feeling the warmth of his touch lingering on my skin, my carefully constructed walls beginning to crumble.
"Don't ever do that again," I managed, my voice trembling.
A slight smirk tugged at the corner of his lips as he continued walking, not looking back. "Meet me outside once you're done," he said, hanging up without waiting for a response.
I stood there for a moment, staring at my phone, trying to process what had just happened. I had half a mind to ignore him and go back to my work, but I knew myself better than that. Despite every warning, every instinct that told me to stay away, I couldn't deny the pull I felt toward Sylus. He was reckless, unpredictable, and exactly what I didn't need. But, I also knew he held pieces of the puzzle I was desperate to complete, fragments of the truth hidden within his dangerous allure.
