Amaya,Barcelona,2024
It's time to go back to school and I'm getting ready to start my first year at the age of seventeen.
This morning, I wake up at around 7am and, as soon as I'm up, send a text to my best friend, Rosa:
-I really hope to be with you this year!
The reply came a few seconds later:
-Me too, Amaya. Where are we meeting?
-In front of my house, in about half an hour. I haven't started getting ready yet.
-That's bullshit, Amaya! We said we'd be up at six!
-Sorry about that :) But don't worry, I promise we won't be late!
-We'd better not be! What's more, we don't want to start the new school year like this, so call me when you're ready.Kisses.
-Ok.Kisses.
Then I turn off my phone, head for the shower. Once that's done, I put on some perfume, then I start to get dressed.I'm a girl who takes a long time choosing her outfit, so I sometimes spend hours trying on clothes, taking them off and trying on others until I finally feel comfortable in them. But that morning, not wanting to be late for the first day of the year, I opted for a white top, a leather jacket and grey jeans, which only took a few minutes. Then I fiddled with my handbag, fixed my hair one last time and went down to the kitchen.
-Ah, at last!" exclaims my father.
-It's not that late.
-Well, it's already 7.30 and you have to be there by 7.45, I'll remind you!
-Yes, well that's fine, the school's not that far away you know.
-I'm just warning you, Amaya, I don't want you to do what you did last year again. The missed classes, that's enough.
-I think we've been through enough, haven't we?
I open the fridge, take out a pot of yoghurt and put it on the table.
-And you're holding me up now.
-Stop it, Amaya! You're already late, I'm just talking to you.
-But can't you just leave me alone?!
-Calm down, young lady! Just because your mother's not here doesn't mean...
-Go on, leave it, you're killing me! I'm going, I need some fresh air. See you tonight.
-See you tonight? Aren't you coming home
right after?
-No, I'm going to spend the day at Rosa's after I get back.
-Again? Yeah. But every summer holiday's been the same... the beach, parties, but none here with your dad.
-Maybe I just need some space!
Then I slam the door and call Rosa.
-Hello, Rosa?
-Hello?
-It's OK, I'm downstairs, you can come.
-What's up? You sound upset.
-Forget it. It's my dad again. He's really getting on my nerves.
-OK. Well, I'm coming.
-I'll see you in a bit.
Then I sit down on a bench, looking at my phone, waiting for Rosa to arrive. It's a complicated start to the day for me.Firstly, because of the start of the new school year, which is stressing me out, but also because of this argument with my father, from the morning. My relationship had always been difficult with him.But more particularly since last year, which had been hard for me.Very hard indeed. And that was because of my mother's departure, who for professional reasons had been forced to move to Madrid for several months. I had a very close relationship with her, much more so than with my father, and to see her go, from one day to the next, was obviously a huge upheaval in my life. I'd lost my motivation, my desire to go to school, and I'd found myself regularly skipping classes to spend my days at the beach, in the park to relax. Without my mother, my daily life was much more difficult.I had also fallen into anorexia, skipping meals in the canteen and eating very little at home in the evenings, and my weight took a hit. I hardly listened in class, I was sometimes cheeky, and I took hours off my coursework... Despite this, I managed to keep a relatively decent average of 12, even with this cruel lack of work. But my father was made aware of my habits and my anorexia. But instead of helping and supporting me, he just shouted at me and blamed me for not telling him about it sooner. Since then, our relationship had been more than fragile, especially as my mother had extended her affair in Madrid, which made family life complicated at home. Fortunately, Rosa and my other friends were there for me, and it was mainly thanks to them that I'd managed to overcome my anorexia. My father, for his part, had never once apologised for what he'd said to me.
-Amaya, you could have told me about this before! It's irresponsible of you! You don't know how to handle yourself, even at 16! So now I want you to get back on the straight and narrow, you understand?
All this had fuelled this anger, which was still there today.
