Naira's pov
After the hug, he just asked me to go downstairs, saying he would join in a minute. I nodded and went down, where everyone was already talking.
I stood beside Nisha (my best friend), who came closer and hugged me.
"Naira, what took you sooo long?" she teased, poking her elbow into my arm.
"Aree kuch nahi, I'll tell you later," I replied with a small smile. Then I walked past her and sat down, as Veer's brothers were calling me, pulling Nisha along with me.
We both sat down with them, laughing and chatting lightly, when suddenly someone cleared his throat. Everyone turned, and there he was — Veer.
I smiled at him without even realizing it, and to my surprise, he returned the smile. Damn... his smile was worth falling for.
His brothers immediately stood up as their grandfather asked Veer to sit beside me. He obeyed silently, and his dada sa spoke up,
"Shall we call the pandit (priest) now?"
Everyone agreed, and soon pandit ji arrived. After going through the rituals and calculations, he finally said,
"Bade hukum sa, there are two possible dates — one after two weeks and the other after a year."
"Then let's go with the first one," dada sa announced with certainty.
Everyone agreed. My heart skipped a beat — so it was decided. I was getting married... in just two weeks. That too, to the King.
Hugs and congratulations followed all around, and after lunch, we returned to our house.
The next week passed in a blur with endless preparations. Soon, it was the week we had to leave for Jaipur. It was late at night, and we were supposed to leave early in the morning. My mind was a storm of thoughts when my phone suddenly lit up — it was Veer calling.
For the past week, we had started talking daily. He had softened around me in little ways, always finding excuses to hold my hand or hug me. Never overstepping, never crossing a boundary — just small, sweet gestures.
I picked up with a smile.
"Hi, Veer."
"Hello, Naira," his deep voice replied. "Actually, I wanted to talk to you about something before we leave for Jaipur. I was thinking... tomorrow, instead of going early with everyone else, why don't I come pick you up a little later? Just the two of us."
Without a second thought, I agreed. We talked a little longer, then I informed my parents I'd be leaving with him and went to sleep.
Next morning, my parents left at 6. I woke up around 8, got ready in a simple kurti with matching jhumke, light makeup, and my hair left open.
Just as I was checking myself in the mirror, Veer called.
"Naira, are you ready?"
"Yes, I'm all set. When are you coming?" I asked.
"Open your main door," he replied.
"What? You were here already? Then why did you even call?" I laughed, hanging up, and ran downstairs.
The moment I opened the door, he pulled me into a tight hug. I instantly knew something was bothering him — he only hugged this tight when he was overthinking.
I broke the hug gently and looked at him.
"What?" he asked.
"Is something bothering you, Veer?" I asked softly.
He hesitated, about to say no, but then sighed.
"Actually... yes. That's what I wanted to talk about. Can we sit?"
We went inside and sat on the sofa. He looked at me seriously.
"See, Naira... I know we've only known each other for a little while, but I've started finding comfort in you. You feel like my safe place. I don't know if I believe in love, or even if I know how to love. Everything I ever cared for was always taken away from me. I'm scared... scared of losing you too. Please, Naira... promise me you'll never leave like everyone else did."
His words tugged at my heart. Without another thought, I hugged him tightly and whispered,
"Veer, believe me... I will never leave you. And about love — don't worry. One day you'll feel it, and when you do, you'll recognize it yourself."
He hugged me back, even tighter, murmuring a soft, broken, "Thank you..."
When we finally pulled away, I smiled.
"Okay, shall we go?"
"Yeah," he said, his expression softer now. He carried my bags himself, placed them in the car, and we drove off. His hand found mine on the seat beside him, fingers entwining gently as he drove.
(And I swear, I still can't understand how the world dares to call him the devil.)
Veer's POV
Tomorrow, our wedding functions will begin in Jaipur. And I... I don't know what I feel. I can't call it love, because love is a word I don't believe in anymore. But whatever this is, it's something different. Something I don't want to lose.
With Naira, I feel at peace. Like the chaos in my head finally silences. Maybe that's why I'm terrified — because what if she leaves? Like everyone else did.
In the past week, we've grown closer. I'm not used to this kind of comfort, but I don't want to let it go.
So I told her everything today. My fears, my doubts, my need for her to stay. And she... she just hugged me like it was the simplest thing in the world, as if her arms could shield me from all the darkness I've carried for years.
That small gesture meant more to me than anything else ever has.
With her by my side, I left for Jaipur.
