Chapter 3: The Path of PowerThe days in Kaerith Aetheris blurred together, a whirlwind of training, revelations, and growing tension. Giana had spent most of her time with Ardan, learning how to control the healing power within her. But the more she trained, the more she began to notice something else stirring deep inside—a power that felt darker, heavier.
It was the power the prophecy warned about. The ability not just to heal, but to absorb power.
Ardan's Concern
"Again."
Ardan's command echoed through the courtyard as Giana stood, her hands stretched over a small patch of flowers she was attempting to revive. Sweat dripped down her brow as she concentrated, feeling the familiar warmth build in her chest. The flowers slowly began to regain their color, their stems straightening as life flowed back into them.
But then something changed.
Giana's hands trembled as she felt a surge of energy—not from within her, but from the flowers themselves. It was like she was pulling their life force into her. The flowers withered almost instantly, crumbling into dust at her feet.
"No!" Giana gasped, stumbling back, horrified at what she had done. "I didn't mean to—"
Ardan rushed forward, his stone-like face tense with concern. "That's enough for today," he said, his voice gentler than usual.
Giana shook her head, still staring at the dust in disbelief. "What's happening to me? Why can't I control it?"
Ardan placed a heavy hand on her shoulder. "You're tapping into the other side of your power—the side meant to absorb energy, not give it. You must be careful, Giana. If you don't learn how to control it, it could consume you."
Wade's Weakness
Later that night, Giana sat by Wade's bedside in the grand castle. His once-strong frame was now weakened, his skin pale and his breathing shallow. He hadn't told her how little time he had left, but she could see it in his eyes—the urgency, the fear.
"How are you holding up?" she asked softly, sitting beside him.
Wade managed a faint smile, though it didn't reach his eyes. "I've been better," he said, his voice raspy. "But I'm more worried about you."
"Me?" Giana frowned. "You're the one who's—" She stopped herself, not wanting to say it out loud.
Wade sighed, turning his gaze toward the balcony where the night sky stretched endlessly. "I know I'm running out of time. But it's you who has the real burden, Giana. The prophecy... the power you have. It's more than just healing me. You're the key to saving both our worlds."
Giana looked down at her hands, remembering the way the flowers had crumbled to dust earlier. "But what if I can't control it? What if I hurt you—or worse?"
Wade reached for her hand, his grip weak but steady. "You won't. You're stronger than you think. And you're not alone."
The Enemy Unveiled
While Giana struggled with her training, the threat against Kaerith Aetheris grew more ominous by the day. In the dark corners of the kingdom, whispers of rebellion and betrayal spread like wildfire. It wasn't long before Ardan and the other generals began to piece together the truth: Wade's poisoning had been orchestrated by someone close to him.
That night, a council meeting was held in the castle's war room, with Wade, Giana, Ardan, and a few trusted leaders.
"We've received word from our spies," said Lady Maelis, a fierce and intelligent Airbender who had sworn loyalty to Wade. "The rebellion is being led by someone within our own ranks. They're planning an attack on the city gates within the week."
Wade's jaw clenched, his eyes dark with anger. "And who leads them?"
Maelis hesitated, her gaze flickering to Giana. "It's General Calen, your father's most trusted advisor."
Giana's heart sank. She had heard of General Calen in the stories Wade had told her—how he had helped their father build Kaerith Aetheris into the kingdom it was today. But now, he had turned against them.
"Why would he do this?" Giana asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
"He wants the throne," Ardan said grimly. "And more than that, he wants control of the power you and Wade hold. If he gets his hands on you, Giana, he could destroy both worlds."
A Dangerous Plan
The room fell into a tense silence as Wade leaned back in his chair, his breathing labored. "We don't have much time," he said, his voice hoarse. "If Calen attacks, I won't be strong enough to defend the city. We need to stop him before it's too late."
"But how?" Giana asked, her mind racing. "I'm still learning how to control my powers. I don't know if I'm ready."
Wade met her gaze, his expression serious. "You have to be. If we don't act now, it won't just be Kaerith Aetheris that falls—it'll be your world too."
Ardan stepped forward, his face set in determination. "We need to draw Calen out into the open, force him to reveal himself. If we can catch him off guard, we might be able to stop the rebellion before it begins."
"And how do we do that?" Maelis asked, her sharp eyes narrowing.
Giana felt a weight settle in her chest. She knew what they had to do, even though the thought terrified her. "We use me," she said quietly. "As bait."
