The night was quieter than usual as Zorak slipped back into the shadows of the city. The artificial lights of the Dominion glowed faintly in the distance, but their brightness could no longer pierce the thick fog settling over his mind.

The voice, the warning—it had shaken him more than he cared to admit. He wasn't just being watched. They knew his every move, his every thought. And worse, they knew exactly what he wanted: Kaia.

His footsteps echoed in the empty alleyways as he made his way toward the underground shelter.

The usual path felt unnervingly exposed tonight, as though the walls themselves were closing in on him. He couldn't shake the feeling that the Dominion was just a step behind, breathing down his neck.

He had little time left.

Once inside the hidden shelter, Zorak locked the door behind him, his heart still racing from the Archive.

The place was dark, lit only by the faint glow of old, outdated lamps. It was here, in the underbelly of the city, that he had spent years preparing. But no amount of planning could have prepared him for this.

The Archive hadn't just been a collection of memories. It had been a prison. Whatever the Dominion had done to Kaia, they had ensured that she could never return to who she once was.

And that voice—it wasn't just a warning. It was a challenge. Someone—something—was manipulating her mind, controlling her emotions, keeping her locked in a state of compliance.

Zorak leaned against the wall, trying to calm his thoughts. There had to be a way to break through.

He had seen her memories—he knew they were still there, buried beneath the layers of control. But how could he reach them without destroying her entirely?

"You cannot save her, Zorak."

The words repeated in his mind like a curse. He had been so close, but the Dominion had outmaneuvered him again.

For years, he had been playing by their rules, thinking he could outsmart them. But now, he was beginning to realize that the game had always been rigged.

A soft knock on the door broke his thoughts.

Zorak stiffened, his hand instinctively reaching for the small dagger he kept hidden beneath his sleeve. No one knew about this place. No one except—

"Selene."

The door creaked open, and Selene stepped inside, her face shadowed by the dim light. She looked tired, her usually sharp eyes dulled by concern.

Without a word, she closed the door behind her and crossed the room to stand in front of him.

"I told you not to go to the Archive," she said quietly, her voice a mix of anger and worry. "It's too dangerous, Zorak. They know."

"I had to," Zorak replied, his voice barely above a whisper. "It was the only way to find out what they've done to her."

Selene sighed, running a hand through her short, dark hair. "And did you? Find out?"

Zorak hesitated, his mind flashing back to the voice in the Archive.

"They've blocked her memories. There's something—someone—inside her mind, keeping her from remembering anything. It's like a barrier, but I don't know how to break through it."

Selene's brow furrowed as she paced the small room. "The Dominion... they're stronger than we thought.

If they've implanted something inside her mind, it's not just a memory block. It's a form of control. They've taken her from the inside out."

Zorak clenched his fists. He had known that the Dominion's reach was vast, but this—this was something else entirely.

They weren't just erasing memories; they were rewriting minds, creating obedient citizens from the remnants of people they had stolen.

"We need to act now," Selene continued, her voice growing more urgent. "If they know you were in the Archive, they'll be watching you even closer. We don't have time to wait."

Zorak's mind raced. He had spent years planning for this moment, but now everything felt like it was slipping through his fingers.

Every second they waited, the Dominion's grip on Kaia tightened. But rushing in without a plan would be suicide.

"There's something else," Zorak said, his voice low. "A voice. In the Archive. It—it knew me. It spoke to me."

Selene froze, her eyes narrowing. "A voice? What did it say?"

Zorak hesitated. He wasn't sure how to explain it, but the words still echoed in his mind. "It said I couldn't save her."

Selene's face darkened, and she shook her head slowly. "They've been watching you for longer than you think, Zorak. The Dominion... they're always a step ahead. If there's a voice in the Archive, it means they're not just controlling memories. They're controlling you."

The room fell silent, the weight of her words pressing down on them. Zorak had always known the Dominion was powerful, but this—it was more than he had ever imagined.

They weren't just controlling Kaia. They were controlling the entire city.

Every thought, every action, every moment had been carefully manipulated, and Zorak had been playing into their hands without even realizing it.

"We need to move fast," Selene said, breaking the silence. "There's a way to break their control, but it won't be easy. It's dangerous."

Zorak looked at her, his eyes filled with determination. "Tell me."

Selene hesitated for a moment before speaking. "There's a device. A neural disruptor. It's hidden deep within the Dominion's main facility.

It was designed to reverse the effects of memory manipulation. But it's highly guarded, and using it could have... unintended consequences."

Zorak's heart raced. This was it. The key to saving Kaia. But the risks—if they failed, it wouldn't just be Kaia who was lost.

The Dominion would come for them both, and there would be no escape.

"I don't care about the risks," Zorak said, his voice firm. "We have to try."

Selene nodded, though her expression remained grim. "Then we need to move quickly. We have one chance. One chance to save her."

Zorak's heart pounded as he thought about Kaia—the girl he had loved, the girl who no longer remembered him.

He had spent years trying to find a way to bring her back, but now, as the reality of the situation set in, he realized just how far the Dominion's control had spread.

But he couldn't give up. Not now.

For Kaia, he would risk everything.
