Chapter 18: A Race Against Time

Rena's POV

I was standing there, my heart racing, trying to find the right words to tell Filip how I felt. I knew I needed to share my feelings with him, to let him know he mattered to me more than I could express. Just as I opened my mouth, a loud crash echoed through the lab.

Zombies poured in, their grotesque forms shambling through the doorway. In an instant, everything I'd planned to say vanished, replaced by chaos.

"Filip! Behind you!" I shouted, but it was too late. A zombie lunged at him, its decayed teeth sinking into his arm.

"No!" My scream pierced the air as I rushed toward him, adrenaline coursing through my veins. I had to help him, had to protect him.

Filip shoved the creature away, and Leon was right beside us, blasting the undead with his gun, but the damage was done. I could see the horror in Filip's eyes as he stumbled back, clutching the wound.

"Rena, it's-" he started, but I could see the fear creeping into his expression.

"We have to get out of here!" Leon yelled, still firing at the zombies pouring in from every direction.

But I couldn't move. I felt frozen, staring at the bite mark on Filip's arm. "You're going to be okay," I whispered, even though I wasn't sure if I believed it.

Filip tried to smile, but it faltered as he looked at me. "You need to focus on survival, Rena. Just get out of here."

I shook my head, unwilling to abandon him. "No! I won't let you turn into one of them!"

We fought our way through the horde, finally breaking free from the lab. I could hear the growls of the undead behind us, but all I could focus on was Filip. We needed to find a way to save him, and fast.

Leon's POV

We made it out of the lab, but the weight of the situation settled heavily on my shoulders. Rena was frantic, glancing at Filip's wound as if it would magically heal itself. I could see the tears welling up in her eyes, and it broke my heart.

"We need to find somewhere safe," I urged, my eyes scanning the area. "If we can find a secure spot, we might be able to think."

Rena nodded, but I could see the panic in her eyes. "There has to be something in the lab! Some way to help him!"

I grabbed her shoulders, forcing her to meet my gaze. "Rena, listen. If there's anything we can do, we'll find it. But we need to act fast."

We hurried back to the lab, where I could already hear the zombies outside, drawn to the noise. As we entered, Rena rushed toward a corner where medical equipment lay scattered, desperately searching for anything that could help.

"Look for syringes, anything!" she called, her voice frantic.

I scoured the room, finally spotting a small storage closet. I pulled the door open and found a few syringes and a medical kit. "Here!" I shouted, holding them up.

Rena dashed over, grabbing the supplies from me. "We need blood," she said, her voice trembling. "It has to be my blood."

I frowned. "Rena, are you sure? What if-"

"I'm sure! I can't let him turn into one of those things!" Her determination was fierce, but I could see the fear bubbling just beneath the surface.

"Okay," I said quickly. "But be careful."

Rena found a syringe and quickly drew her blood, her hands shaking. I could see her resolve faltering, but she pushed through, filling the syringe to the brim.

"We need to hurry," I urged, looking toward the door. The growls were getting louder, and time was running out.

Rena moved to Filip, who was slumped against the wall, breathing heavily. "Filip, I need you to trust me," she said, her voice firm despite the tremor in it.

"I'll do whatever it takes," he replied, his voice strained.

With shaking hands, Rena injected her blood into Filip's arm. I held my breath, watching as she carefully withdrew the syringe.

"It's going to be okay," she whispered, but I could see the worry etched on her face.

Hours passed, but to me, it felt like days. Rena refused to leave Filip's side, holding his hand as he lay on the lab's cot. She watched him, her eyes filled with worry, occasionally checking his pulse, her breath hitching every time he shifted.

"Please, Filip... please be okay," she whispered, tears spilling down her cheeks.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, I noticed a change. The bite marks on his arm were slowly starting to heal. It was a small miracle, but it was enough to fill me with hope.

"Rena, look!" I said, pointing at his arm.

She gasped, her eyes widening as she leaned in closer. "Is it working?"

Filip stirred, groaning softly as his eyes fluttered open. "Rena?" he croaked, and I could see the fear in his eyes.

"You're okay! You're okay!" Rena exclaimed, relief flooding her voice. She squeezed his hand tightly, her tears falling freely now.

Filip blinked at her, his gaze searching her face. "What happened?"

"You were bitten," I explained, still awestruck by the fact that he was awake and aware. "Rena gave you her blood, and it looks like it's working."

Filip glanced at his arm, the skin visibly healing. "You saved me," he said, looking at Rena with a mixture of disbelief and gratitude.

Rena's expression softened, her eyes shining with unshed tears. "I couldn't let you turn into a monster. I... I care too much about you."

Filip's expression shifted, and for a moment, it felt like everything else faded away-the zombies, the chaos outside, the world falling apart.

"I care about you too," he said, his voice steady. "I always have."

Rena's cheeks flushed, and a small smile broke through the tears. "I was just about to tell you that before..."

Before she could finish, another crash echoed through the lab, breaking the moment. We all tensed, the urgency of our situation crashing back down on us.

"We need to get moving," I said, urgency creeping back into my voice. "There's no telling how long we have before they break through."

Rena nodded, wiping her tears away. She squeezed Filip's hand one last time before helping him to his feet.

"We'll get through this together," she promised, her voice strong again.

With Filip by our side, we gathered our supplies and made our way to the exit, ready to face whatever horrors awaited us outside.
