Avoidance

Noticed Sebastian is lacking some love, so I wrote a quick, short chapter for him. I'm running out of ideas ^^; if you have requests, feel free to comment them below.

It's been a week since you started your new position under the Phantomhive household, and though the workload is demanding, it isn't anything you can't handle. What you haven't expected, though, is him. The infamous butler to Ciel Phantomhive: Sebastian Michaelis.

From the moment you stepped into the grand manor, his presence has been unnerving. There's something too perfect about him – his movements too precise, his gaze too sharp, and his voice always carrying an unsettling edge of amusement, as if he knew something you didn't. You have heard whispers from the other servants, tales of how he almost seems supernatural in his abilities, but you dismiss them as idle gossip.

Still, you can't shake off the instinctual wariness that crept up whenever he was near. So, you avoided him.

The first few days, it has been easy. You found excuses to stay busy in other parts of the estate – polishing silverware in the kitchen, scrubbing floors in the hallways, tending to the garden when necessary. But it's impossible to escape his attention forever, and by the week's end, you felt his gaze lingering longer, his presence always just a step behind wherever you went.

Now, standing in the quiet stillness of the library, you can feel it again. That familiar prickle at the back of your neck. You know without looking that Sebastian is nearby, watching.

You pretend to be engrossed in the task of dusting the shelves, moving your hand slowly along the spines of old books, but your mind is elsewhere – focused on him. He hasn't said a word yet, but you can feel his presence in the room, heavy and unmistakable. It sends a shiver down your spine.

Just as you reach the far corner of the room, his smooth voice breaks the silence.

"You've been quite elusive this past week."

You freeze, your fingers tightening around the duster. His tone is polite, as always, but there's a certain playfulness in his words, a challenge almost. Slowly, you turn to face him, trying to keep your expression neutral.

Sebastian stands in the doorway, his hands clasped neatly behind his back, the usual slight smile playing on his lips. His eyes, however, tell a different story — sharp, observant, like a predator sizing up its prey.

"I've been busy," you reply, your voice a little more defensive than you intended. "There's always something that needs to be done."

His smile widens just slightly, as if he finds your response amusing. "Indeed. But you've taken great care to be... occupied in places where I am not."

Your heart skips a beat. So he has noticed. Of course, he has. How could he not?

You let out a quiet breath, trying to mask your discomfort. "Is there something you needed, Mr. Michaelis?"

Sebastian's gaze lingers on you for a moment longer before he moves forward, closing the distance between you with unnerving grace. "Not at the moment," he says, stopping just a few feet away. "I was merely curious about your... avoidance of me."

You stiffen, unsure how to respond. Of course, he's picked up on it. How can you explain your unease without sounding ridiculous? Telling him outright that his presence makes your skin crawl seems unwise, especially when you still have to work under the same roof.

"I'm not avoiding you," you finally say, meeting his gaze with what you hope is calm confidence. "I'm just doing my job."

His red eyes seem to darken, his smirk fading into something more contemplative. "Is that so?" His voice is softer now, almost coaxing, as if he is testing the truth in your words.
