Chapter 1
I used my leg to keep the car door open as I somehow managed to withdraw my suitcase from the backseat. What the hell did I put in there anyway, bricks?
I heard my boyfriend, Carter, chuckle. “Are you sure you don’t need any help, Naomi?”
“I’m fine,” I managed to say through heavy breaths. I leant against the car door as it shut, catching my breath, and went to grab the suitcase handle once again. I was never good at sports…or any physical activity whatsoever, so this would probably be surprising.
Carter opened the door for me, smiling down at me as I placed the suitcase beside the door.
“Wow, this place…” I commented, glancing around at the cabin we would be staying in. Nearly everything inside was made out of wood, except the furniture of course. The kitchen and living room was practically in the same room, with stairs leading down to the basement and stairs leading up to the porch.
“What do you think?” Carter asked, grabbing my suitcase while I wasn’t looking and hauling it into the bedroom just across the entryway. I trailed after him, curious what our bedroom would look like, but then remembered what my parents had said before we left.
“I don’t want you two sleeping in the same bed, or rather, the same room,” my mother had declared, sternly looking back and forth at us.
“Fine, fine,” I responded, sighing. It’s not like Carter was the kind of guy to take advantage of me in my sleep but it still was insulting that she didn’t trust him.
“Honey, it’s not that I don’t trust you two…” she began, pausing for a moment, “It’s just that I don’t think you’re ready for that yet.”
And that was the end of that.
“Carter,” I mumbled, he dropped the suitcase on the king sized bed. I was hoping he would catch on to what I was about to say. “We’re not supposed to sleep in the same room, remember?”
“Oh yeah, sorry. I forgot, I guess,” he said, sighing in disappointment. I grabbed my suitcase and approached the staircase leading downstairs when the front door flew open.
“…relax, will you?” a masculine voice said as two figures walked into our cabin. I dropped my suitcase at my feet and walked over to Carter, holding his hand.
“I know, but -” a feminine voice muttered softly, but stopping as soon as they came in view.
“Oh, hello,” she said, surprised. She walked into the cabin, alongside another person, her boyfriend nonetheless. She had long, wavy hair, highlighted blonde, along with two bright blue eyes that suited her perfectly. When she talked, her teeth couldn’t have been farther from perfect; they were so white that it could’ve blinded someone and they were also pin straight. As for her clothes, she was wearing a short black dress, although it was winter.
Her boyfriend raised an eyebrow and glared at us. “And who the hell are you two?”
“Hey, I’m Carter and this is…” Carter started to say, but stopped as the man walked closer to us. It was weird to refer to him as a man, though. He didn’t look too much older than Carter and I.
He glared at us even harder. “I meant, what the hell are you doing in our cabin?”
In situations like this, Carter had always told me to let him do the talking but I wasn’t about to let my boyfriend be talked to like that. “Your cabin?”
“Yeah, problem?” he asked, glaring down at me as to make me feel like a small child.
“If you hadn’t noticed, this cabin is ours. We were here first. Our families have had this cabin rented out for months.”
He looked taken aback. “Okay, princess, whatever you say. We’ve always had this cabin, so I suggest you kids get out of here before things get ugly.”
“Kids?! I’ll have you know that we're graduating soon!” I explained desperately, my face completely flustered. This guy sure knew how to push my buttons...
“From what? Kindergarten?” he muttered, looking away.
“And how old are you, dumb-ass?” I demanded, my fists clenched at my sides and my teeth grinding slightly.
“That’s too personal so I’m sorry to say that… Well, actually, I’m not sorry!”
“Answer the question!” I bellowed, my face inches away from his.
“You're a bitch, damn -” he started to say, but was pulled away by his girlfriend.
“I’m so sorry for the way he’s acting. It’s just it was a long drive for him and he’s angry and…”
“Why don’t we just talk this over?” Carter suggested. We all nodded, well, except for him. He just stood there until she grabbed his head and forced him to nod.

We all sat down at the table in kitchen. Carter was holding my hand under the table, rubbing my knuckles with his thumb, and the other two just looked awkward. It didn’t even look like they were a couple or anything, they didn’t even look like they were friends. I mean, what was their relationship anyway?
“How about we just live here together until we can get this whole mix-up sorted out?” Carter said, he was always good at being calm in the worst situations.
“I agree, what about you, Matt?” McKenzie stated, turning towards Matt. His arms were crossed, an annoyed expression on his face.
“When hell freezes over,” he said bluntly.
“Then what’s your idea, you idiot?” I asked, jumping off of my chair and placing my hands onto the table.
He didn't say anything else, just looked away with his arms still crossed.
I couldn’t think of anything to say, so I just lowered myself back down in my chair, crossing my arms and glaring at him from across the table as he glared back. Was there anything good about this guy? We were going to have a problem if he didn’t change…well, everything about him.
“Fine,” Matt suddenly said, “But McKenzie and I are getting this bedroom.” He pointed towards the bedroom we were in earlier.
Carter sighed. “Sure.”
“Sounds perfect!” McKenzie exclaimed enthusiastically, clapping like a little child.
Immediately, Matt dragged McKenzie into the bedroom and slammed the door behind them. I didn’t want to know what they were doing in there, they hadn’t even grabbed their luggage…
I moaned, tired. “It’ll be okay, Naomi.” I glanced up at Carter, who was patting my head like he would to a little sister.
“It’s not that… It’s just that guy, he’s so…” I trailed off, trying to think of the perfect words that could describe him perfectly. Mean? That’s obvious, but it wasn’t enough. What about arrogant? No, that’s a given. Simply put, you could not describe him in one word - he wasn't that simple.
He was the most selfish, irritating, deceitful, hot-headed, emotionless, inhumane, conceited, incapable, disrespectful, horrible...
“I’m sure he’ll come around,” Carter reassured me, unknowingly interrupting my thoughts and then rubbing my shoulders comfortably.
“What did you say?” Matt roared from the bedroom, the noise of a suitcase dropping to the floor echoed throughout the entire cabin.
My eyes widened in fear and I swallowed nervously. “Mommy…”
I knew Carter was thinking the same thing, was he even human? There were so many bad qualities about him, it was hard to say which was the worst.
