Humayra sat by the window, staring blankly at the world beyond the glass. The sun had begun to set, casting a soft, golden hue over the landscape, but she didn’t notice. The colors of the sky, the gentle breeze rustling through the trees—it all felt distant, as if life had moved on without her. But for her, time had stood still since the day her mother left this world.

It had been months since her mother’s passing, yet the pain felt as sharp as ever, a wound that refused to heal. Every morning, Humayra would wake up expecting to hear her mother’s voice, calling her to breakfast, gently coaxing her to start the day. But the house was silent now, filled with nothing but the echoes of memories she couldn’t hold on to.

She absentmindedly traced her fingers over the edge of her mother's favorite scarf, which she had wrapped around her own shoulders. The familiar scent—faint but still there—offered some comfort, though it also deepened the ache in her chest. How could life feel so full and yet so empty at the same time?

"Ummi, where are you?" she whispered, her voice barely audible. She wished her mother could hear her, could somehow respond and tell her that everything would be okay. But there was no answer, only the hollow quiet that seemed to engulf her more each day.

Her mother had been her anchor, the one person who understood her without words. She had been the light that guided Humayra through every challenge, her constant source of strength. Without her, everything felt uncertain—like walking through a storm without shelter, not knowing when it would end.

Some days, Humayra tried to be strong, reminding herself that her mother would have wanted her to keep going, to be the person she was meant to become. But other days, like today, the weight of her grief was too heavy to bear. She missed her mother’s warmth, her wisdom, and the way she could make everything seem better with just a hug.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, darkness settled over the room, mirroring the heaviness in her heart. She closed her eyes, trying to remember her mother’s laughter, the way it used to fill their home with life. But the more she tried to hold onto the memories, the more they seemed to slip away, leaving only fragments behind.

A tear escaped, rolling down her cheek, and she let it fall. She had tried not to cry, thinking that maybe if she held it all in, the pain would lessen. But it hadn’t. If anything, it had grown, feeding on the silence, on the absence that had taken root in her life.

Humayra didn’t know how long she sat there, lost in the sorrow that seemed to define her now. But eventually, she stood, wrapping her mother’s scarf tighter around herself as if it could shield her from the world. She knew she couldn’t stay in this place forever. Life was moving forward, even if she wasn’t ready to move with it.

But how do you carry on when the person who gave you strength is no longer there? That was the question that haunted her every day, and she didn’t have an answer.

Suddenly, Humayra felt that a hand had been placed on her shoulders, breaking her train of thoughts.

"Indeed with every hardship comes ease" the voice of Hanan; Humayra's twin sister came
Humayra nodded as Hanan used her fingers to wipe away her sister's tears
"You should pray, it's time for maghrib" Hanan informed " and come to the dining when you're done, abinci ya dahu; food is ready" she added and walked out of the room.

Humayra smiled lightly, Ummi's death affected them all, but Hanan was the only one who managed it with so much grace.
And even if Hanan was younger she acted as though she was the older one, making sure she and Abba were alright.

Humayra folded her mother's  scarf and placed it on her pillow and proceeded to the bathroom to perform wudu; ablution and pray.
