James Campbell tapped his earbuds with two rain soaked fingers to skip to his favorite running song, 'Paper Planes' by MIA. He pushed hard, breathing fast, his headlamp beam bobbing.
James saw the flash of headlights, but couldn't react before the truck slammed into his body, lobbing him high into the air and landing hard with a sickening whump on the soaked grass. He heard the truck's door and lifted his head enough to illuminate his mangled knee, bent backward. He tried to shout, but his shattered ribs wouldn't fill with air. Darkness steadily seeped into his vision like a closing curtain. The last thing he felt was a sharp icy stab in his leg.
