The school gymnasium was a kaleidoscope of lights and colors, the air buzzing with anticipation as students filled the space, their laughter echoing off the walls. Maya stood outside the entrance for a moment, heart racing, as she took in the scene. Dressed in her flowing blue dress, she felt a mixture of excitement and anxiety wash over her.

“Hey, Maya! There you are!” Ethan called out, weaving through the crowd to join her. He wore a bright smile, decked out in a sharp blazer that matched her dress perfectly. “You look amazing!”

“Thanks, you too!” she replied, forcing a smile despite the nervous flutter in her stomach.

As they stepped into the gym together, Maya tried to absorb the festive atmosphere. Glittering decorations hung from the ceiling, and a DJ played upbeat music, filling the room with energy. Students danced and mingled, their laughter creating a sense of camaraderie. For a moment, Maya allowed herself to enjoy the moment.

“Let’s get some snacks first!” Ethan suggested, leading the way to the refreshment table.

As they grabbed cups of punch, Maya felt a wave of relief wash over her. Being with Ethan made the looming shadow of her fears feel a little less oppressive. They chatted about their favorite songs playing and exchanged playful banter, gradually easing her nerves.

But as the night went on, Maya couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off. Every time she glanced around, she felt James’s presence lingering in the back of her mind, an unwelcome reminder of her troubles.

“Do you think we should dance?” Ethan asked, nudging her playfully.

“Sure! Let’s do it!” Maya replied, wanting to shake off her worries.

They made their way to the dance floor, joining the swirling mass of students moving to the rhythm of the music. As they danced, Maya tried to immerse herself in the moment, but her eyes kept darting around the room, searching for any sign of James.

Suddenly, the music shifted to a slower song, and couples began to pair off. Maya felt a twinge of disappointment as she watched her classmates find partners, swaying gently to the melody. Just then, she caught a glimpse of James across the room, standing by the punch table, his gaze fixed on her.

Her heart raced as he stepped away from the table and began to make his way toward her. Maya’s breath hitched. “Ethan, I think he’s coming over,” she whispered, her voice trembling slightly.

“Stay close to me,” Ethan replied, moving protectively beside her.

“Hey, Maya! You look beautiful tonight,” James said, his voice smooth and confident as he approached them.

“Thanks,” she replied curtly, trying to maintain her composure.

“Mind if I steal you for a dance?” he asked, a hint of arrogance in his tone.

Maya glanced at Ethan, who gave her a subtle nod, his jaw clenched. “Actually, I’m dancing with my friend,” Maya replied, firming her stance.

James’s smile faltered for a moment before he regained his composure. “Come on, it’ll be fun! Just one dance?”

“No,” Maya said, feeling a surge of courage. “I really don’t want to dance with you, James. I think it’s best if you leave me alone.”

James’s expression shifted, a flicker of annoyance flashing across his face. “You’re making a big deal out of nothing, Maya. I’m just trying to be friendly,” he replied, crossing his arms.

“Maybe you should take a hint,” Ethan interjected, stepping forward. “She doesn’t want to dance with you.”

“Who do you think you are, defending her?” James shot back, his tone dripping with sarcasm. “She can speak for herself.”
