Sunday morning unfolded like any other, with Audrey preparing breakfast and waking Wendy to join her at the table. As they sat together, chatting and eating, the day's excitement began to build. Audrey, buzzing with energy, was getting ready for Elia's party, while Wendy had her own plans, taking Rex for a walk and then preparing for her date with Liam.
"God! I am so excited for the party, I've never been to one!" Audrey said, tucking a lock of hair behind her ears with a big smile.
Wendy, not quite matching the enthusiasm, replied with a yawn, "Calm down, girl, you're going to be fine."
Audrey shot her a confused look. "Hey, what's up? Are you not excited about your date?"
"I am excited," Wendy said, a bit distracted. "But I'm just thinking about what to wear. I don't wanna look like I just crawled out of bed."
Audrey laughed and gave her a quick side hug. "Just wear something casual. You're gorgeous anyway, you don't need to try so hard."
With that, Audrey darted off to her room to finish her party preparations. Wendy, left alone at the table, took a deep breath, her thoughts growing heavier.
"Tonight's my chance to perform the ritual and make contact with Mom..." Wendy whispered to herself, feeling the weight of her secret plan. But with a shake of her head, she refocused. "Okay, I should get ready for the date first."
Wendy passed by Audrey's room, the door slightly ajar, where Audrey was in full chaos mode. Clothes were strewn across the bed, makeup brushes scattered on the vanity, perfumes lined up like soldiers, and heels kicked off in every direction. Audrey was caught up in the whirlwind of party preparations, oblivious to Wendy's quiet movement. Wendy carefully shut the door, as if sealing off the noise and excitement, before slipping into her own room like a thief in the night.
"Alright, before I get ready, I need to make sure everything is in place for the ritual," Wendy whispered to herself.
She knelt by her bed, pulling out the hidden items one by one. The skull Liam had brought her, the candles, the herbs, everything was lined up in a meticulous order. At the bottom of the pile was the worn-out diary, where she had carefully written down the instructions for the ritual. Satisfied that everything was there, she stashed the items back under the bed, making sure they were well-hidden, as if concealing the weight of her secret from the world.
With the ritual preparations out of the way, Wendy turned her attention to getting ready for the day. She chose a simple white t-shirt and baggy blue jeans, pairing it with her black hoodie. Tying her hair into a neat ponytail, she laced up her white sneakers, stepping back to glance at her reflection in the mirror.
"I look good... just like Mom," Wendy murmured with a soft, almost nostalgic smile. The resemblance, though comforting, brought a bittersweet ache. The thought of her mother gave her strength but also deepened her longing to make contact.
Today was just another day on the surface, but tonight, tonight would be different.
Wendy stood at the front door, her hand on the knob, and called out, "Hey! Audrey! I'm taking Rex out for a walk. After that, I'm heading out with Liam this afternoon!"
Audrey's voice echoed from her room, "Okay! Have fun!"
Wendy smiled, closed the door behind her, and made her way to Mrs. Beatrice's apartment. She knocked softly, and the door swung open, revealing Mrs. Beatrice's warm, gentle smile.
"Good morning, dear! How are you doing?" Mrs. Beatrice asked kindly.
"I'm good, Mrs. Beatrice. How about you?" Wendy replied, clasping her hands behind her back.
