It had been a risk, coming here. More of a risk than the previous two. There was no CCTV inside, but somehow the stakes felt higher.

The shadow had followed its target to a flat in central London. It generally didn't like to work in human residences, but needs must. It had a list, it had an opportunity to make it shorter, and it didn't have all night.

The man was squatting outside the flat window, peering inside at darkened windows, looking displeased at its emptiness. This one had been young when they'd killed her, but he'd been there. He'd witnessed her death and done nothing. Now he watched a human's residence like he had a right to be there; the shadow could smell the violence coming off him. He had not learned; his punishment would be the same.

A ruby flash in the dark as the shadow's target became aware of company.

But by then, it was too late.
