The sun hung low in the sky, casting a warm glow over the quiet, suburban street as Marcus pulled his car into the driveway of his new home. The air was thick with the hum of cicadas, and a gentle breeze carried the scent of freshly cut grass. To any outsider, this neighborhood would seem idyllic a perfect escape from the noise of the city. But as Marcus killed the engine and sat in the stillness of the moment, a sense of unease stirred in his gut. It was subtle, just a flicker, but enough tinksidnhin side before stepping out of the car.

"New Beginnings," he muttered to himself, shaking off the feeling. He was here for a fresh start, far away from the mess he'd left behind. No one knew him here. That was the whole point.

He grabbed his bag from the passenger seat and stepped out, taking in the house that was now his. It wasn't much of a modest, two-story with peeling spin and a porch that needed a little work but it was his own. After years of feeling stuck in a slide, he didn't recognize, this finally felt like freedom.

As he unlocked the front door and pushed it open, the cool, musty sir inside greeted him. It smelled old and unused, but that would change. He's made this place feel like home in no time. He dropped his bag by the door, letting out a deep breath, and decided to take a look around the property.

Stepping back outside, he noticed her Laura.

She was standing on the pitch next door, watering a row of plants with a delicate hand. She hadn't seen him yet. Marcus stood still, watching her for a moment longer than he should have. There was something about her something almost magnetic. Long brown hair, the king that framed her face just right, and a figure that made it impossible to look away. When she finally glanced up, their eyes met.

She smiled.

It wasn't the kind of friendly, neighborly smile you'd expect. It was something deeper, mysterious, and more intimate like she already knew him like she was expecting him.

"Hey there," she called out, her voice was smooth and warm. "You must be the new neighbor."

"Yeah," Marcus replies, stepping closer to the fence that separates their yards. "Just moved in today. I'm Marcus."

"Laura," she said, leaning against the porch railing, studying him. "Welcome to the neighborhood."

"Thanks. It's....quiet around here."

Laura laughed softly, a sound that sent a strange sensation down his spine. "It had its moments. You'll get used to it."

He wasn't sure what to make of her, but something in her gaze lingered a little too long, her smile a little too Inviting. He hadn't expected to meet someone like her so soon after arriving. Marcus had promised himself that this new chapter of his life would be simple no complications, no distractions. But as Laura's eyes locked onto his, he couldn't help but feel that simplicity was already slipping through his fingers.

"Well, if you need anything, I'm just next door yk," she said, her tone light but her eyes saying more. "I'm always around."

"Thanks," Marcus said nodding. "I'll keep that in mind."

She gave him one last look before turning back to her plants, but even as she walked away, Marcus couldn't shake the feeling she was still watching him, still pulling him in with some invisible thread.

As he headed back inside, closing the door behind him, that flicker of unease returned. Something about Laura wasn't right, but it was too early to say what. All he knew was that the neighborhood didn't feel so quiet anymore.

And Marcus wasn't sure whether that was a good thing or not at the moment.
