"Nice hair, Howe," Burton laughed as she sat down beside me. "Let me guess, you tried to wash the colour away last night?"

I sighed, pushing my hat down even further, but it was no use. It did very little to cover the disgusting shade of green that my hair was coloured.

"How was I supposed to know that washing my hair would only make the pigment more repulsive," I scoffed. When my best friend only laughed, I hid my face in my hands. "Okay, how much longer until the dye wears off?"

"It should only last a few more hours," Burton shrugged. "I should have dyed it with something stronger after what you put me through last week."

Despite my agitation, I still had to stop myself from laughing. Last week, I managed to put gigglewater in every single beverage she drank. Honestly, I have no idea how I did it, but it caused Stokes two weeks of detention from Snape, who was not fond of the way Stokes kept disrupting his lessons.

"I have no idea how I'm going to top myself," I said, shaking my head.

"Good," Burton said. "Please, don't. If I wasn't laughing, then I was hiccupping. It was horrible."

"Very entertaining, though."

Burton sent me an annoyed look, but it didn't last long. When her eyes trailed up to my hairline, she was reminded of the horrible prank she pulled two days ago, and her face lit up.

"Well, if you don't think you can top yourself, we could always form a truce," Burton shrugged. "I think it's time."

I stared at Burton warily, and she crumbled in seconds, laughing loudly.

"Bullshit," I said, laughing as well. "Did you really think I would agree to throw away this six year rivalry over that?"

"Rivalry is a bit much," Stokes shrugged. "Maybe, a friendly prank battle."

"Friendly?" I scoffed. "You shaved off my eyebrows last year."

Burton and I's friendship was far different than any of my other friendships. Was she my best friend? Yes. Did I spend half of my time hating her? Also, yes. But that was only because she never held back when it came to a prank, which, in a way, I admired her for.

We met in our first year. I was a nervous, muggleborn student and had no idea what I was getting into, while Burton was a pureblood with three rowdy older brothers who were already at the school. Burton was the first person to pull a prank. It was originally aimed towards her older brother, but I walked into her carriage first, just to ask her where the bathrooms were, and got a face full of shaving cream.

I managed to get her back before the sorting ceremony. It was just a sign on her back reading Kick Me, but it was enough. I had thought at the time that I had made an enemy for the rest of my time at school, but when I saw her finally take the sign off and look at me with a somewhat proud smile, I realised I had instead made my first friend.
