"So, how long has this been going on?" Tyler's dad questioned jokingly, putting the bowl of salad in the middle of the table.

To be honest, Tyler thought the salad ruined the feeling of it being winter. He kept looking across the table out the window with the sun-bleached curtains to remind himself it was still snowing, because he loved to watch the snowflakes sway from side to side before melting into the snow on the ground.

"I don't keep count," Tyler shrugged, looking at his sweetheart out of the corner of his eye. Her name was Amelia, and she was just too lovely to be looked at full on.

That's how Tyler saw her.

"Relax, Tyler, it was only a joke," His dad said before going back to eating the winter-defying salad. Amelia chuckled.

Tyler looked at his dad and smiled. He looked at his plate, still full with salad. He wasn't hungry.

He then glanced at Amelia. He thought she was looking at him, but he realized she was looking past him. Tyler turned around to see his mother, sitting at the table, and laughing.

He jumped at the clanging of a fork being dropped.

"Sorry, Ty, didn't mean to scare ya." His father stood, picking up the fork. "You kids look about done with your food, do you want me to take it in?"

"Thanks." Amelia gave her plate to Tyler's dad.

Tyler turned around once again to find that the seat where his mother sat was empty, the chair was pushed in, and the place mat still sat untouched with the silverware wrapped in napkins on it.

He sighed, and his father grabbed his plate.

Dinner was always dead when his mother wasn't here.

"Why don't you guys take a walk? Get out of the boring old house for a while."

"Alright," Tyler said bleakly. He needed a walk anyways.

He looked at Amelia, who was already at the door by the time Tyler got up.
