April 25
The day of the picnic arrived, and I met Kazuki and Sawako at the park, arms loaded with our contributions. We spread out a blanket under the shade of a large cherry blossom tree, its petals gently falling around us like pink snow."Let's eat first, then we can play some games," Kazuki suggested as we settled in. The atmosphere was light and filled with laughter as we dug into our food.
Just as I took a bite of my onigiri, my phone buzzed in my pocket. I glanced down and saw a message from Miyu. My heart raced at the thought of reconnecting with her. I excused myself from the group, trying to hide my excitement.
"Hey, I'll be right back. I need to check something," I said, stepping away a few paces.
Once I was out of earshot, I opened the message. It read:
Hey Taro, I've been thinking about our last conversation. I hope you're doing well. How's everything going with soccer?
I felt a rush of warmth at her words. I quickly typed back,
It's going great! We're having a picnic right now. How about you?
As I awaited her reply, I couldn't shake the feeling of nervousness mixed with hope.
Taro: Hey, Miyu! How are you feeling today? I was thinking about you.
Miyu: Hi, Taro. I'm okay, just taking it easy. How about you?
Taro: I'm good! We just wrapped up soccer practice, and I feel pretty pumped about the tournament coming up. It's going to be exciting!
Miyu: That sounds fun! I wish I could be there to cheer you on.
Taro: You should come! It would be great to see you in the stands. Plus, the team would love your support.
Miyu: I'd really like to, but... I'm not sure if I can handle the crowd right now.
Taro: I totally understand. It can be overwhelming sometimes. If you do come, I'll make sure to keep an eye out for you.
Miyu: That's sweet of you, Taro. I just don't want to worry anyone if I can't keep up.
Taro: You don't have to worry about that. Just focus on what feels comfortable for you. I'm here for you, no matter what you decide.
Miyu: Thanks, Taro. That really means a lot.
Taro: Sounds good! Just let me know if you decide to come. I'd love to catch up.
Miyu: I'll think about it. I'm glad we're talking again. It feels nice.
Taro: Me too. I've missed this.
As I put my phone away, I felt a mix of emotions swirling inside me. I had just messaged Miyu, my heart racing at the thought of our upcoming picnic, but now I needed to rejoin the group.
When I walked back, I found Sawako and Kazuki chatting animatedly about the tournament.
"Hey, Taro! You looked a bit preoccupied over there. Everything okay?" Sawako asked, her curiosity piqued.
I nodded, trying to keep my tone casual. "Yeah, just catching up with a friend."
"A friend?" Kazuki raised an eyebrow, clearly interested. "Anyone we know?"
I hesitated for a moment. "Not really, just someone I've been reconnecting with."
Sawako raised an eyebrow. "Oh? Is this friend coming to the picnic?"
I smiled, enjoying the chance to keep things light. "I'm not sure yet. I'll have to see if they're available."
"Good luck! It sounds like you're putting yourself out there," Sawako encouraged. "I'm sure it'll be fun for everyone!"
