Quiet metallic squeaking.
Man breathing rapidly.
Whimpers.
The man kept turning the screw as fast as he could, trying to open the vent. He grunted quietly as he tried to open the vent. But the screw was still there in the hole. The man kept turning it. There was a loud crash as a chair fell from the pile of things piled up against the door. The man gasped as he glanced over his shoulder. He turned his attention back to the screw and managed to take it off. Someone pounded on the door. He whimpered, opened the vent, and crawled in. The pile slowly fell. The man used a flashlight to guide himself in. He made it to a T form in the vents and whimpered. He decided to go to his left. He grunts as he pushes the vent open. He crawled out and left the flashlight on the floor as he slowly walked deeper into the storage room. It was dark. Very dark.
Scrap
The man flinched and gasped, only to notice that he had moved a chair with his foot. He opened the door, a muffled pop music playing in the distance. There were lights flashing on the stage. The man whimpered and ran to the right side of the hall. A shadow of a fox appeared as a light flashed it. The man whimpered again as he turned left, running as fast as he could, constantly glancing behind him. The lights over him buzzed as they turned off, one by one. The man made it to a fence door. He tried to open it but the door only rattled.
Humming.
The man slowly turned to look behind him. He then panicked, started breathing heavily, whimpered, and tried as hard as he could to budge the door open.
Heavy footsteps.
The man turned and pressed his back against the door. He screamed and everything went black.
He opened his eyes, only to find himself on a chair, held by metal bars from the chest, wrists, and ankles. The man started breathing heavily again as he tugged on his wrists.
Whirling. Rattling.
The man looked straight ahead. There was the back of a bear face with disk-cutters. The red eyes grew. The man whimpered and strained.
Low growl.
The head moved slowly to the man's face. The man shook as he tried to get free. The whirling and rattling intensified. The man found the screw and tried to take it out with his pinky. He whimpered as the face kept getting closer and closer. The man whimpered loudly as the face was already near his. He tried so hard to get the screw off. He was so close to getting free! But the face kept getting closer. Eventually, the man cried out. The red eyes of the face shrank. The man screamed, echoed, and faded.
Beep! Beep! Beep! Beep! Beep! Beep! Beep! Beep! Beep! Thud!
Mike sat up to the edge of the bed and sighed, closing his eyes before opening them again. He rewinded the tape on the alarm clock, dropped his sleeping pills in the cabinet, and got up. He did some push-ups before getting dressed for work.
"Abs, you ready?", he asked as he opened the door of Abby's room. "Abby-"
Abby wasn't in her bed. Mike looked at the tent in the corner of the room near the window.
"Abs", Mike called again. He walked up to the tent. "Come on. I know you're in there. Let's go"
Nothing. Abby pretended to be asleep. Mike shook the tent blankets.
"Abby, come on"
"Ok, ok", Abby finally responded. She peaked her head through the opening and looked up at him. "You're being a jerk"
"You know I have somewhere I have to be", Mike said. "Come on, let's go. Five minutes" Mike walked away and reached the door. "I need you dressed"
Squeak!
Abby had thrown a bear plushy at Mike. Mike turned to look at her and Abby hid behind the blankets of the tent.
"Five minutes", Mike repeated and walked out her room.
The crowd chatted. Mike sat in front of Jeremiah, who took a sip of his coffee and set it down on the table before reading a part in the book 'Dream Theory'. "'And though the dreamer remains asleep, he walks through memory as if experiencing it for the first anew, no longer a passenger but an active participant'", he finished and closed the book. He looked at the back of the book and chuckled. He placed the book down and looked at Mike. "This stuff for real?"
Mike nodded slightly. "People think so", he said softly. "Guess it depends on what you believe", he added.
"Summer of '82, I traded a mint condition Cal Ripken Jr. rookie for a used copy of 'Missile Command'", Jeremiah said. "That card's probably worth 800 bucks now"
Mike nodded slightly.
"I wish I could participate in that memory and actively kick my own ass", Jeremiah said. He looked down at the book and picked it up, flipping through the pages. "Can I keep it?"
"No", was all Mike said and Jeremiah handed him the book back.
"I would like the walnut fudge, but I want the fudge on the side because I don't want it to melt the ice cream", a woman said, who was in front of Mike in the line. Mike looked around at every movement that caught his attention. "And can I get some whipped cream on top and three cherries?"
"Coming right up", Cindy said. It was Mike's turn. He walked up but looked at a small boy standing by himself. "Hey. You want your usual, right?"
"Uh, yea", Mike said. His mind was somewhere else.
"Hey, Mike. Hey, Cindy", Autumn said as she came running out of nowhere. She patted Mike softly on the back and waved at Cindy. She seemed out of breath.
"Hey", Mike said before turning his attention back to the lonely kid.
"Let me guess, he is getting the usual?", Autumn asked Cindy. Cindy only smiled and turned to the slushy machine.
"So, when are you gonna bring your sister by?", Cindy asked Mike. But Mike was in another world. A man took the lonely kid from the arm and dragged him away. "We got this new flavor, Rainbow Explosion"
"That sounds childish", Autumn said.
"I bet Abby will go crazy for it", Cindy said. Mike took off running.
"Mike?", Autumn called out as he watched him run. "Mike!"
Mike walked through the crowd. People passing him looked at him with a puzzled expression as he walked by. He started jogging. "Hey!", called out Mike to the man. He started running. "Hey!", he called out again. "Hey!"
Mike jumped and tackled the man to the water fountain. He started punching the man. The crowd gasped and murmured.
"Mike!"
