The air was crisp and alive with the promise of the night as Lucian, now seventeen and a full-fledged member of the Wolfe pack, strolled through the familiar woods that surrounded their territory. His heart beat with a mix of anticipation and anxiety as he headed toward the clearing where his friends had gathered. This place held memories of laughter, camaraderie, and the bittersweet sting of the past year.
"Lucian!" a voice called out, breaking him from his thoughts. It was Marcus, his childhood friend and the pack's resident jokester. With his tousled brown hair and bright blue eyes, Marcus had a way of lightening the mood, no matter the circumstances.
"Hey, Marcus," Lucian replied, a small smile forming on his lips.
"Look who finally decided to show up!" Marcus teased, throwing an arm around Lucian's shoulders. "We were about to send out a search party. You know, just in case you got lost in your own brooding."
"Ha-ha. Very funny," Lucian retorted, shaking off Marcus's hold. "I was just... thinking."
"Thinking? About what? How to be the most brooding alpha in history?" Marcus laughed, mimicking a dramatic pose. "'Woe is me! I have rejected my beautiful mate and now I shall wander the earth in despair!'"
The rest of the group, which included Aiden, the pack's muscle with a heart of gold, and Mia, their sharp-tongued strategist, burst into laughter. Lucian rolled his eyes, but he couldn't help but chuckle at his friends' antics. They were a constant reminder of the lightness he often lost in his own heavy thoughts.
"Okay, enough about my tragic love life," Lucian said, trying to steer the conversation elsewhere. "What's everyone up to?"
"Planning world domination," Aiden quipped, flexing his muscles for effect. "But we can settle for a bonfire and some marshmallows first."
"Count me in! I can roast the perfect marshmallow," Mia declared, brushing a strand of her dark hair behind her ear. "Just don't expect me to share. You all know how I feel about sharing food."
"Fair enough," Marcus said, grinning. "But if I see you hoarding those marshmallows, I will personally stage a raid."
Lucian shook his head, laughing. It felt good to be around his friends, even as memories of Fawn crept into his mind. He couldn't shake the guilt that accompanied her rejection. Despite the laughter, the ache of that moment remained raw. But he knew that tonight was about putting aside those thoughts, at least for a while.
As they settled around the bonfire, the flames danced like spirits, casting flickering shadows across their faces. The warmth enveloped them, and soon enough, the atmosphere buzzed with chatter and friendly banter.
"Alright, Lucian," Marcus said, leaning forward with a mischievous glint in his eye. "We need to talk about your love life. Or lack thereof. You've rejected your mate, and yet here you are, moping around like a lost puppy."
"First of all, I'm not moping," Lucian protested, but he knew it was a losing battle. "Second, it's not like I can just magically fix things with Fawn."
"Maybe not magically, but you could at least try to make amends," Mia suggested, her tone turning serious. "You know she's hurting. We all saw it."
"I didn't want to hurt her! I just... I thought it was the right thing to do at the time," Lucian replied, frustration creeping into his voice. "But now? Now it feels like a mistake. Every day, it feels worse."
"Because it is a mistake," Aiden chimed in, his voice steady. "Look, Lucian, we get it. You're trying to fulfill some duty, but you can't just ignore what's in your heart. You need to talk to her."
