Slowly, I open my eyes. I don't know what time it is, but it's dark outside, and Alexander is sleeping on the chair next to my bed, holding my arm.
For some reason, my body is pain. In a stronger pain. Yesterday, my body wasn't in pain, and now, it is.
"Alexander," I mumbled as I weakly moved his hand that was holding mine, "Alexander."
Alexander stirs, slowly opening his eyes. He looks tired but relieved that I'm awake.
"Cara," he murmurs groggily, his voice laced with sleep. "What is it?"
"I-it hurts... a lot," I say with difficulty, my breathing heavy.
The pain is intense, like thousands of sharp needles piercing my body at once. I wince, trying to get more comfortable.
Alexander is instantly awake, his eyes wide. He leans closer, concern etched on his face.
"What hurts, love?" he asks, his voice urgent. "Your head? Your chest? Where does it hurt?"
"Whole... body..." I mumbled.
His face darkens at my words, and he looks at the monitors next to my bed. They start beeping as my heart rate and blood pressure rise slightly due to the pain.
"Damn it," he mutters under his breath, his hand running through his hair in frustration. "Just stay still for a moment, alright? I'll go get the doctor."
He gently places my hand back on the bed and gets up quickly, heading out of the room. I'm left alone with the constant beeping of the machines and the dull ache that seems to emanate from every part of my body.
After what feels like an eternity, the door finally opens again, and Alexander enters, followed by the same German doctor from before. The doctor immediately goes to the monitors, checking the readings.
The doctor takes a moment, analyzing the data, then looks at me with a grim expression.
"Your vitals have spiked again," he says, his voice serious. "And you're in a lot of pain?"
I nod slowly, wincing as another wave of pain washes over me. The doctor approaches the side of the bed, a syringe in hand.
"I'm going to give you a stronger dose of painkillers," he says reassuringly, injecting the needle into my IV line. "It should help ease the pain in a few minutes."
He steps back, watching me with a clinical eye as the medicine starts to take effect. I can feel the pain slowly starting to subside, replaced by heavy drowsiness. My eyelids begin to droop.
"Get some rest," the doctor instructs, his voice softer now. "The pain should be less severe when you wake up. We'll do some more tests later to see if we can figure out what's causing this."
The doctor and Alexander exchange a few quiet words, their voices low, but I'm way too tired to pay attention. As I drift off to sleep, I feel Alexander's hand take mine again.
