The night outside the studio was calm, though the clouds hung heavy, threatening rain. Yoongi liked the quiet of nights like this-no noise, no interruptions, just the stillness that let him think. But lately, even the quiet wasn't enough to calm the mess in his head.
He pushed open the door to the small recording room, instantly spotting Taehyung sitting at the piano, his back to the door. Taehyung's fingers rested lightly on the keys, but no music filled the room. That alone was strange. Taehyung wasn't the type to sit in silence when he was at the piano. Usually, he'd be humming, creating something from nothing with that natural creativity he carried so easily.
Yoongi stepped inside, the door closing softly behind him. He had spent enough time around Taehyung to recognize when something was off. Tonight was one of those nights.
"You've been here a while," Yoongi said, his voice low but enough to break the silence. He crossed the room, setting the cup of coffee he'd brought for Taehyung on the piano bench. It was their unspoken routine-working late into the night, sharing small gestures instead of words.
Taehyung glanced at him, a faint smile tugging at his lips, but it didn't reach his eyes. Yoongi noticed. He always noticed. "Just... trying to find the right sound," Taehyung muttered, his eyes dropping back to the piano.
Yoongi leaned back in the chair across from him, folding his arms over his chest. Something was definitely off. He could see it in the way Taehyung's shoulders were drawn a little too tight, his hands hovering over the keys as if he didn't know what to do with them. It wasn't like him to be this uncertain.
"You sure that's all it is?" Yoongi pressed gently. "You've been a little... off lately."
Taehyung's fingers twitched, and Yoongi saw him tense just a fraction. He wasn't expecting that question, and that was enough for Yoongi to know that something was definitely wrong. He kept his eyes on Taehyung, waiting for the younger man to answer.
"I'm fine," Taehyung replied quickly, his voice too rushed to be convincing. Yoongi knew him too well to believe that. But instead of pushing further, Yoongi let the silence settle between them again. He wasn't one to pry. He never was. If Taehyung wanted to talk, he'd talk.
Still, Yoongi couldn't help but feel the weight of something hanging between them. Something unspoken, something that had been building for months, and maybe-just maybe-it wasn't just Taehyung who was holding back.
Yoongi leaned forward slightly. "Play it again," he said, gesturing to the piano.
Taehyung hesitated, his eyes flicking up to meet Yoongi's for just a second before dropping back to the keys. His fingers pressed down, and the melody flowed softly into the room, a slow and melancholic tune that seemed to carry the weight of everything Taehyung wasn't saying.
Yoongi listened, his gaze fixed on Taehyung's profile. He could hear the emotions in the music-the uncertainty, the longing, the sadness. He wondered if Taehyung even realized he was playing his feelings out loud. It was one of the things Yoongi admired about him. Taehyung had a way of expressing things through music that Yoongi could only do with carefully crafted lyrics. But tonight, even the music seemed hesitant.
When the melody faded, Yoongi didn't say anything for a long moment. He wanted to ask, to push, to understand what was going on in Taehyung's head. But Yoongi wasn't great with words. He wasn't good at asking the right questions, and he didn't want to push Taehyung away by saying too much.
"It's beautiful," Yoongi said finally, his voice quieter than he intended. He didn't elaborate because he didn't need to. The music had said enough, even if Taehyung wasn't ready to.
Taehyung leaned back, his hand running through his hair in that familiar, frustrated way. "Do you ever feel like... like you're waiting for something to happen, but you don't know what?"
Yoongi frowned slightly at the question, but he didn't respond right away. He thought about it-really thought about it. Because, yes, he did feel like that sometimes. Maybe more than he wanted to admit.
"Sometimes. Why?" Yoongi asked, his tone softer now, more careful.
Taehyung shrugged, his fingers fidgeting in his lap. "I don't know. Lately, it feels like I'm waiting for something to change, but I don't know if it's a good thing or if I'm just... overthinking."
Yoongi's brows furrowed. Change. The word hit him harder than he expected. He'd been feeling it too-that shift in the air, the way things between them had been different lately. Subtle, but there. And Yoongi wasn't sure if it scared him or if it was something he was secretly hoping for.
"Change isn't always bad, you know," Yoongi said, his voice a little quieter now. "Sometimes it's exactly what we need."
The moment the words left his mouth, he wondered if Taehyung caught the deeper meaning in them. Yoongi didn't show his emotions easily, but around Taehyung, it was harder to keep things hidden. He always felt like he was teetering on the edge of saying too much.
The rain began to fall, a soft patter against the window, filling the silence between them. Yoongi's eyes stayed on Taehyung, watching the way his shoulders tensed ever so slightly, the way his gaze flicked toward the window but didn't really see it.
Taehyung let out a shaky breath. "Have you ever been scared of what might change?"
Yoongi felt something tighten in his chest. His instinct was to brush off the question, to deflect like he usually did. But with Taehyung, it was different. He couldn't lie. Not to him.
"Every day," Yoongi admitted quietly, his voice barely above a whisper.
The air between them felt heavier now, like something was about to break open. Yoongi's heart pounded in his chest, and he wasn't sure why he suddenly felt so exposed. Taehyung always had a way of doing that-of making Yoongi feel things he wasn't ready to face. And lately, it had been harder to keep those feelings buried.
"I think... I think I'm scared of losing something important," Taehyung said, his voice trembling slightly. Yoongi's eyes snapped to his, searching his face for a hint of what he meant. But deep down, Yoongi already knew. He could feel it. The same fear that had been gnawing at him for months.
Without thinking, Yoongi leaned forward, his knees brushing against Taehyung's. It was a small gesture, but enough to close the distance between them, to remind Taehyung that he wasn't alone. "You're not going to lose me, Taehyung," Yoongi said, his voice firm but soft. "No matter what changes."
Taehyung's eyes met his, and for a brief moment, Yoongi thought he might say something-something that would shatter whatever delicate balance they'd been holding onto. But he didn't. The rain outside grew heavier, the sound filling the space around them.
Yoongi could feel the unspoken words hanging in the air, so close he could almost reach out and grab them. But neither of them was ready for that. Not yet.
For now, Yoongi would stay in the quiet, waiting for the day when they were both brave enough to face whatever was between them.
