They say, "You've nothing to fear but fear itself."
But do they even know what it's like
To stand there like like a deer in the headlights
Looking fear in the eye
And dare it to move forward?

Do they know how fear
Can eat you alive?
Consuming you the more it grows?
Growing, growing, until it is all
And you are nothing.

It doesn't discriminate,
Does not favor rich or poor.
No matter who or what you are,
It will find you.
You cannot escape.

And then you're alone in the dark,
Hiding under a blanket again,
Legs kicking madly,
Heartbeat thumping out your ribcage
Like a scared little rabbit
Caught in a hunter's trap.

My heartbeat sounds like thunder in my chest,
Alerting that abomination
To the location of its prey.
Savage teeth glint in the dark
As it prepares to swallow me whole.
Did I ever really have a life?
Or from the moment I left my mother's womb,
Have I let my fear govern me?

In my last moments,
I am a scared child again,
Watched by a thousand glowing, hungry eyes,
Waiting for me to blink so they can feast.
I fear them,
So I am theirs.
