The weekend was off to a perfect start as Mia and I settled into our favorite corner of the café, the morning sun pouring through the large windows and casting a warm glow over everything. The place buzzed with laughter and the clinking of dishes, creating the perfect backdrop for our brunch.
"Okay, we've got to talk about the upcoming volleyball game," I said, taking a sip of my freshly squeezed orange juice. "We're going to kill it next week! I can feel it."
Mia grinned, her eyes sparkling with enthusiasm. "Absolutely! But, Stacey, you better not run out during the game again," she joked, raising an eyebrow. "We need you on the court, not filming an overdramatic drama."
Rolling my eyes, I couldn't help but laugh. "Now that was uncalled for, but yes ma'am, I'll be on my A game."
"Good, because we need all the points we can get!" Mia shot back, feigning seriousness. "With your killer spikes and my amazing sets, we're practically unstoppable."
"Together, we're a force to be reckoned with," I agreed, leaning back in my chair, proud of our little team. The thought of the game filled me with excitement, but just as quickly, my mind flitted to another topic. "Speaking of forces, how's it going with Hannah? You two have been looking super cute lately."
Mia's cheeks flushed a delightful shade of pink. "Ugh, I don't know. I mean, she's sweet and all, but what if she thinks I'm just messing around?"
"Come on, Mia! You two have such a great vibe. Just ask her out already!" I encouraged, a teasing smirk on my face. "Imagine how cute you'd look together officially! Matching outfits, cute couple photos..."
Mia groaned, burying her face in her hands. "Shut up, you're so annoying."
"Can you blame me?" I laughed, enjoying the playful banter. "In all honesty, you two would be adorable together."
Time felt like it was flying, finally spending time with my best friend for an overdue catch up until her phone buzzed on the table, interrupting our moment. Mia glanced at the screen, and her face brightened. "It's Hannah! She's calling."
"Mmhmm, she's definitely into you." I nudged her playfully. "You should definitely go hang out with her. I'll be your supportive best friend from a distance!"
"Are you sure? I don't want to leave you hanging," she said, her eyes darting between her phone and me.
"Pssh, I'll be fine! I can entertain myself," I insisted, waving my hand dismissively. "Go have fun with your almost-girlfriend. Just don't forget to text me all the juicy details later!"
With a giggle, Mia answered the call, her voice instantly shifting to an excited pitch. "Hey, Hannah! What's up?"
As she chatted away, I couldn't help but feel a warm glow of happiness for her. I loved seeing Mia so giddy over someone special, even if it meant I'd be on my own for a little while. Watching her animated expressions, I felt a sense of anticipation for the day's events ahead. It was a good weekend, and I was ready for whatever came next.
I took a sip of my orange juice, relishing the sweet tangy flavour, when something caught my eye across the café. My heart skipped a beat as I recognized a familiar figure, Miss Hart. But she wasn't alone; another woman stood beside her, their conversation heated.
I squinted, trying to make out the details from my spot, but the distance blurred my view. It was clear, though, that Miss Hart was trying to create some space. Her body language was tense, shoulders rigid, as she leaned slightly away from the other woman. I noticed her stormy grey eyes were narrowed, her brows knitted together, and there was a slight frown etched on her lips that I had never seen before.
