The encounter with the intruders had left Sage shaken, but there was a flicker of excitement within her.
As she dressed, Sage chose a simple yet elegant riding outfit-a fitted navy blouse paired with tailored trousers, comfortable yet stylish. She added a leather riding jacket, knowing it would keep her warm during the early morning ride. Her hair was pulled back in a practical braid, but a few loose strands framed her freckled face, giving her a playful look. She studied herself in the mirror, taking a moment to appreciate her reflection.
Stepping into the dining room, Sage was greeted by the rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the sound of her family gathered around the long, ornate table. Her father was deep in conversation with her mother, while Clara was already fussing over the plates of food being served.
"Good morning, Sage!" Clara called, her voice brightening the otherwise somber mood of the room. "You look lovely! Ready for your ride?"
"Definitely," Sage replied, forcing a smile. She knew today would be different; she wasn't about to let her father's disapproval dictate her actions any longer.
"Are you going out to the woods again?" her younger sister, Lyra, piped up, her innocent blue eyes wide with curiosity.
"Yes," Sage said, her heart swelling with affection for her sister. "I'm just going to explore a bit."
"Be careful," her mother said, looking up from her plate. "I heard about those riders. Your father is worried about you."
"Is he ever not worried?" Sage muttered under her breath, but her mother's gaze was sharp.
"Watch your tone, young lady," her mother reprimanded gently. "I just want you to be safe."
"I know, Mother," Sage replied, forcing down the irritation that bubbled within her. "I can take care of myself."
"Be home before dark, Sage," Lord Barrow chimed in, his voice gruff yet commanding. "And take Kade with you. I don't want you going alone after what happened yesterday."
"I won't go alone," Sage assured him, but her mind was already racing with plans. "Kade and I are riding together."
Her father frowned, clearly displeased with her boldness. "Just make sure you're not causing any trouble, especially with those riders still lurking about."
"Understood," she replied, biting back her frustration. The conversation had turned stale, and she was eager to escape the confines of the dining room.
"Alright, I'm off!" Sage announced, standing abruptly. She couldn't stand being in the same space as her father for another moment. The walls felt like they were closing in on her.
"Wait, at least let me help you with your horse!" Clara exclaimed, rushing after her.
The stables were a welcome sight, filled with the familiar scents of hay and leather. Kade was already there, brushing down his horse with a meticulousness that made Sage smile. He looked up as she approached, his expression brightening.
"Ready for another adventure?" he asked, his green eyes sparkling with excitement.
"Absolutely," Sage replied, feeling the familiar thrill of freedom wash over her. "Though I don't know how adventurous it will be with my father breathing down my neck."
"Let him worry. You deserve to ride freely," Kade said, moving closer. "Are you sure you're okay after yesterday? You seemed rattled."
"I'm fine," Sage insisted, though the memory of the encounter still lingered in her mind. "I just want to get away from the estate for a bit, to feel like myself again."
