We were all crammed around the door, trying to steal glimpses of Steven and Belly's dad with his new girlfriend. The hallway felt suffocating, a blend of curiosity and awkwardness hanging in the air. Jeremiah peeked through the crack first, eyes widening.
"She's hot," he whispered, his voice barely above a murmur.
"Dude," Steven muttered, his face scrunching up in mild disgust. He looked ready to shove Jeremiah away from the door.
"What? I'm just saying what everyone else is thinking," Jeremiah protested, raising his hands defensively.
Belly and I exchanged a quick glance, sharing a silent conversation before we both spoke at once. "I wasn't thinking that," we said in perfect unison. I rolled my eyes, taking a step back from the door, trying to suppress a laugh.
Conrad, standing behind Steven, leaned against the wall with his arms crossed, a smirk forming. "Yo, that could be your future stepmom," he said with a teasing edge to his voice.
Steven shot him a glare. "Dude, what the hell," he groaned, giving Conrad a light shove.
Conrad just chuckled and nudged him back. "Don't push me, man."
Before long, they were shoving each other like little kids, turning the hallway into a battlefield of playful jabs and grins. Belly stood on the sidelines, rolling her eyes but unable to hide her amusement.
"Guys!" I hissed, trying to reel them in before they got too loud. "Guys, seriously. They're coming!" I backed away from the door, my heart racing. "They're coming! Ah!" Jeremiah laughed, excitement bubbling up as we all scrambled in different directions like we were caught in some sort of spy movie.
We dashed through the back door just in time, leaving Belly and Steven to face the awkward encounter. Once we were safely outside, Jeremiah slowed to a stop, catching his breath, and grinned at me.
"She's hot? Really, Jere?" I teased, giving him a playful nudge.
He raised an eyebrow, not missing a beat. "What? She is. But not as hot as you," he said smoothly, his lips curling into a smirk as he twirled me around like we were dancing. His playful charm had me laughing.
"Very smooth, Jere," I giggled, leaning in to kiss his cheek. I could feel the heat rise in my face as we settled into the moment, the world around us melting away. For a second, it was just the two of us—quiet, content, perfectly in sync.
His gaze softened, and I felt myself getting lost in his eyes. Time felt irrelevant when we were like this, like we could freeze this moment forever. But of course, that peace didn't last long.
"Get a room!" Jade's voice shattered our little bubble, and I turned just in time to see her walking toward us with her hands dramatically covering her eyes. Conrad followed close behind, fake-gagging.
"Is it too late to bleach my eyes?" Conrad added, feigning a horrified expression. He caught up to Jade and together, they stood side-by-side, grinning like the troublemakers they were.
I shook my head, laughing despite myself. "You two are not funny," I said, crossing my arms.
"We're comedy gold!" Jade declared, high-fiving Conrad as if they were in perfect sync.
Jeremiah and I exchanged a look, amused but defeated. "Comedy gold, huh?" Jeremiah said, raising an eyebrow. "More like fool's gold."
Jade gasped dramatically, placing a hand on her chest. "Excuse you, I'll have you know we're the dynamic duo of this group."
