The ships wooden deck boards creaked so loud in the deafening silence of the night. Agonizingly, you both sat in silence looking up at the many stars. A million thoughts raced through your mind as you wondered what he was thinking. You weren't sure how long the awkward silence would continue between the two of you, but it seemed like eternity.
"Haven't you ever wanted to leave?" You spoke up, looking over to the captain.
He tore his gaze away from the sky to look at you. His sapphire eyes shining in the moonlight. You never noticed until now just how intriguing he was. He wasn't the mean and cruel scurvy pirate captain you had heard about. Soft spoken and gentle, like a different person. He was more docile.
"What? Me?" Hook furrowed a brow in confusion at the question, pondering. It was something he had never really thought about. Mr. Smee had mentioned it many times previously but he just dismissed the topic. He was far too busy plotting his move to get Pan. Now that Peter Pan was no longer his obsession, his thought shifted on the topic yet he was still uncertain.
"Neverland, I mean. Go adventuring someplace new." You explained, turning your body to face him. Your left boot accidentally bumping into his. He just smirked as you apologized.
"Aye, you'll be needin' new ones." Hook pointed to the scuff marks covering your boots."Don't change the subject, Hook." You snapped, pointing a finger at him. "Look, if you stayed here you'd remain miserable and alone. Don't you want to be free? Free from Peter and his bandits teasing you. Free to do whatever you wanted. Don't you want to sail the seas and be the great captain you are?"
The pirate was taken aback by your sudden courage to speak to him in such manner. No one ever talked back to the captain of the jolly roger. No one except Peter Pan and his lost boys. Thinking back on all the horrid things his enemy had done to him, his eyes became disheartened.
"..aye, I've chased that brat of a boy all over this retched island. Longing to get me revenge after he...took me hand."
Hook's voice cracked on the last word as he raised to show the replacement of his hand. With a heavy sigh, his gaze turned to the stars above as he pointed his hook to the sky."You see that star, there, the second one to the right? Thats where I would sail to." He leaned back closer to you and rested his hand on the deck beside him to steady himself from falling over, resting the metal hook on his lap. Your eyes followed to the sky where he was pointing with his hook. It was the same very star you were looking upon moments ago.
"Back to my land?"
"Aye," Hook nodded, lowering the metal claw for a hand. "It seems just so.. tranquil there."
"I lost someone there...back home. someone very close to me." Your voice trailed off and your gaze dropped to your feet; sadness again overcoming you like a dark veil as your heart sank reminiscing.
"Thats why I was so very eager to leave when-" you began to explain, but got cut off."-I showed up." Hook finished, recalling the night he had showed up at your open window sill. He glanced down at you then looked back to the bright star in the sky where your home was.
You slowly slide your right over and place it on his. The touch startled Hook as he jerked his head in your direction then looked down. To your surprise he didn't move his hand out from under yours. Instead he just stared for a moment with a mix of confusion and panic on his face.
It was strange for him as he had forgotten what it felt like after losing his other to the crocodile."You gave me a way out. To a new place. One free from pain and memories of a lost loved one."
The pirate blushed as he turned his hand over and grabbed yours. Blue eyes staring deep into your soul. Your heart was besting so fast that you feared you would faint at this point. Hook took your hand in his. Slowly, he raised it up and pressed a gentle kiss to your hand.
"I'd follow you anywhere, me hearty."
