Waking up in the morning is the worse. Especially if it's at 6:30am. I reach for the alarm clock that is currently beeping like it's a bomb. I sit up groggily and rub the sleepy dust from my eyes. God I hate Mondays but who knows? Today could be the best day of my life.
I quickly change into the outfit that I selected the night before and head downstairs. My dad is sitting at the kitchen table reading today's newspaper.

"Mornin dad!"

"Hey Pumpkin, ready to take on today?", he asks.

"As ready as I'll ever be!" I reply.

I open the fridge and take a quick survey of what we have to eat. Deciding that it's best to get something on the way to school I close the fridge door.

"Where's Jack?" I ask dad.

"Probably still sleeping", he says.

Jack my older brother of one year is probably the laziest person you've ever met. He barely does his homework and don't even mention chores (not like there's alot anyway). Although he has his flaws he has always been a supportive brother. I'm lucky to have him in my life.

"Do you want me to take you to school on my way to work?" My dad asks.

"Are you sure dad? I mean I don't want you to go out of your way."

"Nah your school is on my drive to work. Go get ready and I'll bring you in five minutes", he says not even glancing up from the newspaper.

I run upstairs and knock on Jack's door. When I don't get a response I decide to let myself in.

"Holy shit Jack did a bomb go off or something? And what the hell is that on your floor?" I say as I look at the red blotch on the floor.

"Dude get out of my room and I don't know pizza or something?", he replies with a shrug.

"Well I swear I just saw that "pizza" breathing" I say while blocking my nose and doing air quotes at pizza. "Anyway, dad said he can take us to school on the way to work in five so be ready".

I don't wait to hear his response before I close the door. Finally fresh air! As much as I love my brother I do not want to spend one more second in his room. I am practically ready to go but I have to grab my backpack. Once I get it from my bed I check myself in the mirror once more. Before I can stop myself I look down to see the picture of me, Jackson, my dad, and my mom. That picture was the last family photo that was taken before the accident.

We were on vacation in Bar Harbor Maine and we decided to visit Acadia. It was mom's idea to climb Acadia mountain. Jack and I didn't want to go. I mean, which 8 and 10 year old wants to hike up mountain voluntarily? But mom and dad insisted it would be a good family experience, so we did. When we got to the top Jack and I were still mad we had to hike but our moods soon went away once we saw the view. There wasn't a cloud in the sky and you could see for miles and miles and ocean was the bluest I've ever seen. It was also mom's idea to take a picture. She said that if we were to remember anything from this vacation it was that we climbed a mountain as a family. She told us, "If we can climb this mountain together, we can climb all mountains together".

Looking back to that picture reminds me that I can overcome any obstacle, not just for me, but for mom. I look at myself in the mirror once more. I wipe the tears that have escaped my eyes and take a deep breath. As my mom use to say to me each day,

"Take a deep breath. Today is a new beginning with new possibilities. Go and discover them."

And that is exactly what I plan on doing.
