"Hey Dad, have you seen my-" I started, but my voice trailed off abruptly as I froze in the doorway, my eyes widening in surprise. There, right in the middle of the man cave, stood three unfamiliar faces, each of them completely focused on me. The room, usually filled with the comforting clutter of sports memorabilia and old trophies, suddenly felt crowded and strange.
The tall blond one, who had an air of confidence about him, turned his head to look me up and down. I felt an odd mixture of curiosity and annoyance bubble up inside me. "Who's the chick?" he asked, his tone casual but laced with a hint of disbelief, as if he couldn't quite reconcile my presence with the usual occupants of this space.
"Hey! There you are!" My dad calls out just as I am about to respond to the blond guy's remark. He steps into the room from the adjoining hallway behind the tubes, bringing with him an air of familiarity that felt both comforting and disorienting in this suddenly unfamiliar scene.
"Dad, hi" I exclaim, relief flooding through me. "I was just looking for my gum tube. Can't find it anywhere..." My words tumble out in a hurried stream, the urgency and bizarre situation amplifying my anxiety. Just as I thought things couldn't get any more complicated, the girl among the three strangers spoke up, her tone inquisitive . "Wait, wait, wait... Are you by any chance Starlight?"
Her question hangs in the air, momentarily suspending time itself. My brain racing, heat traveling to my cheeks as I look up at my dad for any help on how to get out of this.
"What, no, that can't be Starlight," the blond boy interjected, glancing between the girl and me with a mixture of doubt and skepticism, before my dad can even open his mouth to say anything. "Starlight hasn't been in Swellview in years..."
The curly-haired boy, who had been quietly observing, chimed in. "And Starlight's, like, really hot!" His crude observation made my face heat up even more, and I instinctively crossed my arms over my chest as if that could somehow shield me from the scrutiny of their gazes.
"Jasper!" The girl exclaimed, directing a look of reprimand at the curly-haired boy while the blond guy shot him a similar glare. I took a side glance at my dad, whose expression was a mix of shock and disbelief as he stared at Jasper, the curly-haired boy. I couldn't help but laugh slightly to myself.
"And what if she was?" My dad finally asks, turning his focus back to the trio, particularly entering his attention on jasper, who had just made the situation that much more complicated. There was a protective spark in my father's voice that made me swell with gratitude, and yet, the uncomfortable twists of this encounter only deepened my embarrassment.
"Dad, please..." I finally manage to speak up, my voice slightly exasperated but tinged with affection. "don't scare the boy to death"
"Yes, I'm Starlight..."
