CHAPTER FIFTY THREE

the odd thing about regulus black

BETTY FOUND IT odd that James, Sirius and Peter had landed in the hospital wing again right after the full moon. She bounded in with freshly baked muffins for each of them in their assigned Tupperwares. They all greeted her warmly and she couldn't tell if it was mostly due to the smell of the muffins that wafted out of her bag.

"I have them for each of you," she said with a smile in her voice as she went around the beds.

"You really are the best, Birdy," Remus mumbled with a weak, but grateful smile.

"They're cinnamon apple, your favorite," she said quietly to him as she stood by his bedside with a mischievous smile. She set her bag down and quickly kissed him on the forehead before feeling his temperature.

"I'm perfectly well taken care of here," Remus groaned with the same tired smile as he brushed her hand off of his forehead.

"Well, there's three others here," she said more loudly as she turned to the three other beds that faced each other. Remus and Peter were next to each other with James and Sirius on the other side. A formation that Madame Pomfrey had absentmindedly created and immediately regretted. "And I can't believe she put you two together."

"She almost fainted when she realized," Sirius remarked with a grin all the way over in his bed.

"We've been good," James interjected with a warm smile. She bit back a smile as she looked over at him and nodded. She quickly handed each of the boys their muffins. She stopped at James's bed and brushed the hair out of his face. "Thank you, Bee." He grinned and his eyes sparkled.

"Lord, between you and Remus, I'm a whole forest," she chuckled.

"Where did Birdy come from anyway?" Peter asked from his bed.

"Our mum used to call her that because Betty would collect broken egg shells from the birds that lived in our garden. Sort of stuck," Remus replied as he and Betty made eye contact, both of their eyes softened.

She walked over to him and took his hand. "What did you lot do this time anyway?" She asked as she looked between the four of them, but at them exchanging looks, she looked down at Remus's bedside. She started arranging his work that had been strewn there.

"We tried building a treehouse to stay out with him," Sirius offered with unease lacing his voice.

"You've already said that excuse," Betty said, not looking up. But she could feel that she caught them off guard. All of their gazes immediately snapped to her.
