ALYANA awoke with a start, her body aching from an awkward position on a worn-out, dusty couch. The faint scent of mildew and damp wood hung in the air, filling her lungs as she took in her surroundings. She was still wearing her emerald gown from the Masquerade Ball, her mask long gone, but her head throbbed with the memory of being betrayed, kidnapped, and taken by force.

Her hands instinctively reached for her wrists, finding no chains or physical restraints, but she could feel the pressure of something else—magic. Her own powers were still intact, humming beneath her skin, but they were being suppressed. It was as if there was an invisible hand pressing down on her abilities, not quite cutting her off completely, but making it difficult to access her full strength.

She sat up, wincing as the stiffness in her body made her movements slow. Where was she? Her eyes adjusted to the dim light filtering through the broken windows of the room. It looked like a dilapidated mansion, far from the grandeur of the Lockwood Mansion. Dust coated every surface, and cobwebs hung in the corners like ancient curtains. The silence was eerie, broken only by the occasional creak of the floorboards as someone walked in another part of the mansion.

The last thing she remembered clearly was the betrayal—Lucy, her cousin, aligning herself with Katherine and turning on her in the middle of the Masquerade. The shock of it still stung. How could Lucy have done that? Alayna had trusted her, believed that despite their complicated family history, Lucy would stand by her. But Katherine always had a way of twisting people's motives, of turning allies into enemies with a single conversation.

Alayna shook her head, trying to focus. She couldn't let herself be consumed by Lucy's betrayal now. She had to figure out where she was—and more importantly, where Elena was.

She stood, her legs shaky beneath her, and quietly made her way toward the door, trying to move without making a sound. The floorboards groaned softly under her feet as she pressed her ear to the door. Faint voices drifted from the other side, hushed but clear enough to make out if she focused.
