"It's a mystery how we managed to live here at all!" Julie said. "This apartment is no bigger then my school locker." She was kneeling on the floor trying to fit the books from here crowded beg room into her bookcase underneath the window.
It was November so the day was grey and misty.
"Be glad it's small" Julie's mum called from the kitchen "house work takes half the time it used to."
"I just wish we had a bigger place."
She liked the apartment as it was close to school and the park was only down the road. Her mums shop 'gladrags' was downstairs.
Julie did Miss the spacious house they all lived in back In the north of San Francisco, before her parents got a divorce. She missed her dad being at home with them. She also missed having her best friend, ivy, living right across the street.
Once she managed to cram the books into the book shelf she stood up. "At least there is not much floor space to Hoover" Tracy, Julie's sister, said.
Her sister was never happy and cherry unless she wanted something like she obviously did now. "Of course we are pretty far from the grocery store, but don't worry mum because I can drive down to get you what we need. How about I go down now and get tonight's dinner?"
"New it" Julie thought. Tracy was always comin up with reasons to use the car.
"No thanks honey, I have a casserole planned."
"Can I at least drive to the library." Tracy said.
"Not this afternoon I want you to help with the table decorations for thanks giving."
Julie turned to the window and looked out. In the fog she saw a girl in a yellow rain coat coming down the streat. She was walking 2 dogs.
When a gust o wind blew the hood off the girl, Julie recognised her from school. It was joy, Julie was going to shout out the window, when she remembered joy was death.
Julie then saw another figure among the fog. A lady who was strugglerling to hold her umbrella against the wind. She watched the lady cross the streat and come to gladrags. The lady stopped outside their shop and lifted the lid of their trash can, that Julie had put out earlier. The lady lifted a lamp from the bin that was broken. The lady looked over her shoulder and then quickly stuffed her lamp into her big bag. Then the lady quickly walked off round the corner.....
