Freen and Becky's physical and mental health have suffered as a result of their ceaseless pursuit of the truth. Becky observed Freen's fatigue one evening as they were working late in their office.
She said, "Freen, you need to take a break," with a worried expression on her face. "You're pushing yourself too hard."
Freen looked at Becky and massaged her eyes. "I can't stop now, Becky. We're close to something."
The look on Becky's face softened. "You're not alone in this, Freen. I'm here for you."
For a brief period, the tension between them was evident when their eyes met. Becky felt a sudden spark as Freen's eyes fell to her lips.
Becky turned her head aside, her cheeks reddened. She responded, "I'll make some coffee," in a voice that was almost audible above a whisper.
Freen was unable to get rid of the sensation that had awakened inside her while Becky busied herself in the kitchen. Although she had always appreciated Becky's steadfast support, her perspective on her had changed.
Freen's eyes met Becky's again as she brought the coffee back. Her eyes held a glimmer of vulnerability this time.
Freen said softly, "Becky, can I ask you something?"
Becky said, "Of course, Freen," her heart pounding.
"Why are you doing all this for me? You believe in me, even when I doubt myself."
Becky's gaze was fixed on her. "I believe in you, Freen, because I see the good in you. You're not just a client or a friend; you're...you're someone special."
As Freen's face got closer to Becky's, the tension in the air increased. The sound of Becky's phone broke the quiet where their lips nearly met.
Becky spoke breathlessly, her gaze fixed on Freen's. It shattered the hypnosis, but the call was short.
Becky's eyes remained in Freen's as they withdrew. "Thank you, Becky. For everything."
Becky had a feeble smile. "Anytime, Freen."
The undercurrent of attraction persisted even after the moment was passed. They went back to work, but the mood had changed.
Weeks passed, and they made a startling finding as a result of their inquiry. A crucial, hitherto unidentified witness came forward, exposing a network of dishonesty that extended well beyond Freen's case.
Freen and Becky worked together even more smoothly as they put the pieces together. The unspoken attraction between them intensified as their mutual respect and trust increased.
Freen turned to Becky as they left the workplace one evening. "I'd like to take you out for dinner tonight. As a thank you." A beat skipped in Becky's heart. "I'd love to." From case facts to personal tales, their dinner discussion flowed naturally.
Freen discovered Becky's dreams, her love for her family, and her desire for justice. Freen understood under the stars that her sentiments for Becky went beyond thankfulness. She was enamored with her. Freen's arm brushed Becky's as they walked home together as the evening came to an end. There was no denying their bond.
Freen turned to Becky at her door. "I'm glad we have each other, Becky." Becky's eyes were glistening. "Me too, Freen." The spark between them ignited into a flame as their lips touched in a sweet, tender kiss.
The night air was suddenly broken by a disturbance as they were intensifying their kiss. A neighboring car screamed to a stop, and a faint voice on the wind said, "Becky, you're getting close to the truth. Back off now."
With a start, Becky's eyes opened and met Freen's. In a whisper, she asked, "What was that?" Freen's expression grew stern. "I don't know, but we'll find out."
They hurried back to their office without saying another word, intent on finding out where the dire warning had come from. Becky's phone rang, piercing in the quiet as they rushed through the door. After hesitating, she responded.
Her face went white. "Freen, it's Jennie. She's been arrested. The police say they have new evidence against her...and against you."
Freen's eyes went wide with fear. "What evidence?" Becky's tone faltered. "They won't say. But we need to get to the station, now."
Freen and Becky exchanged a desperate look as the darkness closed in. Just now, their battle for justice had taken a terrible turn.
