The deck was peaceful tonight. You heard nothing but the sound of calm waves and a gentle breeze, basking in the silver glow of the moon that kissed your skin. You hung lazily over the railing up by the helm, watching the soft crests of the waves lap against the side of the Sunny. While you were supposed to be on watch duty for the night, things were just so calm that you ended up doing more relaxing than anything else. You had a feeling nothing intense would happen tonight, so you weren't too concerned, your eyes getting droopy while you let out a long, soft sigh. Maybe you could take a short nap...
... Or maybe not. The once peaceful silence was broken by the sound of a door closing, then the sound of a lighter flint flicking a few too many times. A scoff, then a string of swears could be heard before more desperate scrapes of flint. Lifting yourself from the railing a little, you peeked down at the main deck and saw Sanji looking frustrated as ever, unsuccessful in getting his lighter to give life to a flame.
"Oh dear... He's just gonna upset himself further." You mumbled to yourself, already pushing away from the railing.
He was so focused on his malfunctioning lighter that he hadn't noticed you at all as you came down to the main deck, sneaking up behind him on his right. you watched him for a few seconds more before you finally tapped his shoulder, starling him quite a bit; enough to make him nearly drop his lighter.
"Ooo, grumpy and jumpy." You hummed. "You doin' alright Sanji?"
"Ah, it's just you [y/n]-chan! You really startled me there!" He huffed with a weak chuckle, quite delighted to see you. "I forgot you were on night watch tonight. Lucky me~. Ah, I could go whip up a warm drink for you, if you'd like?"
A charmer as always; he never hesitated to be so sweet and offer you food. Normally you were quite casual with Sanji, never really swayed by his quips and antics outwardly. You were quite good at hiding your innermost thoughts. Tonight though, there must have been something in the air...
"I'd love that, but I don't wanna tear away from why you're here. I'm curious to know what you're doing up so late. Can't sleep?" You asked, redirecting the conversation to keep him there with you.
He paused, hummed a little, then sighed in defeat. " You can tell, hey?"
"You look dreadfully tired, and frustrated too." You pointed out. "You were cussing up a storm here a minute ago. Is something wrong with your lighter?"
"Hmm? Ah, yeah... It won't light anymore. Sorry you overheard my frustrations." He chuckled sheepishly. "Lighters die eventually, so it's no big deal. Don't worry about a thing~"
"Mmm, no big deal yet your hands are shaking. Here, I've got a match." You said, beckoning him closer as you pulled a small book of matches out of your pocket.
He came closer to you as you had asked, and in one swift movement you struck the match and lit his cigarette for him, the mad admittedly mesmerized by the orange glow that sparked between you. You always knew what he needed, even when he was being stubborn and insisting he was fine. He swore he saw hearts in the flames that flickered in your eyes, nearly forgetting to take a drag to keep his cigarette lit. Your casual confidence always made him swoon a bit, only able to hear the thrum of his heart drowning out his thoughts. Only when the flame went out did he realize you were holding out your hand, and he looked at you a little confused.
"Let me see your lighter." You chuckled, snapping him from his daze. "Depending on what's wrong, I can probably fix it."
"Are you sure? It... might be done for. I've refilled it as much as I can and still no flame." He told you.
"Mmhmm, I'm sure. It's not always the fluid that's the problem." You nodded. "I've fixed a couple lighters before. Yours shouldn't be too different."
"I mean, if you insist, then of course. I trust you." He hummed, dropping the lighter into your palm.
