Jake's mind was a whirlwind of emotions-rage, paranoia, and restlessness blended into a volatile storm he couldn't escape. He needed space, air to breathe away from the suffocating tragedy. The break in, the fire, the weight of it all was closing in. Standing on the sidewalk outside the cafe's remains, he finally turned to Lisa.
"Take Alexandra with you. Go to my apartment. I need to clear my head."
Lisa tried to argue, concern written all over her face, but Jake's expression silenced her. She nodded, realizing this wasn't a time for questions. With Alexandra in tow, she watched as Jake hailed a cab. He didn't tell her where he was going, just that he needed space.
As the cab pulled away, Jake directed the driver to Penn Station, his mind already made up. Three hours later, after the long train ride, Jake found himself in Asbury Park, a place that had once brought him peace. The chill in the air bit at his skin as he stepped onto the beach, boots in hand. The overcast sky cast a gray hue over the waves, and for a moment, he felt something close to calm as he walked the shore.
He found a familiar spot on the sand, sinking down onto the cold ground. He opened his phone and scrolled through the gallery, finding the picture-him and Anna, taken right here. The memory of that day was both soothing and painful. She was gone, just like everything else slipping through his fingers. Staring out at the horizon, Jake was still for a long time, lost in the rhythm of the waves crashing in the distance.
Snapping a quick picture of the beach, he uploaded it to his blog. The messages from his followers poured in, offering sympathy and encouragement after hearing about the fire. He scrolled past them, feeling their weight but unable to respond.
After a while, hunger gnawed at him, so he wandered into a nearby restaurant. He sat quietly, the low murmur of conversation around him a distant hum. As he ate, something felt off. From the corner of his eye, he noticed a man in a black shirt and dark sunglasses lingering a bit too long, watching him. Jake's paranoia flared up, but he shrugged it off. He was too tired to care.
Finishing his meal, he left the restaurant and hailed a cab back to the train station. As the car pulled away, Jake glanced in the rearview mirror and saw the same man tailing him in a black sedan. The knots in Jake's stomach tightened. This wasn't just paranoia. He was being followed.
At the station, just as he was about to board his train back to the city, his phone rang-it was Alexandra. Part of him wanted to ignore it, but instinctively, he knew something was wrong. He picked up.
"Hey, Alexandra."
"Jacob, the cops sent me some photos from the hotel break-in... you need to see them," she said, her voice frantic.
"Alexandra, calm down." He tried to soothe her, but she cut him off.
"Jacob, the black SUV-the one from the cafe-it was at the hotel too."
Jake's blood ran cold. It wasn't fear he felt-it was something darker. Rage. Pure, unfiltered rage. His mind sharpened, his senses came alive.
"Listen carefully," he said, his voice low and commanding. "You and Lisa need to go to Sam and Katie's. Before you leave, open the safe. Take the knife and hide it behind the lamp near the TV. Just say 'okay' if you understand."
Alexandra hesitated, processing his instructions. "Okay," she whispered and hung up.
Jake's heart pounded as he bought his ticket, keeping his eye on the man still following him. He boarded the train and found a seat in a less crowded car, checking the man's movements from a distance. Once settled, Jake pulled up the email Alexandra mentioned and looked at the photos. His suspicion was confirmed-the same black SUV from the cafe was in the hotel's parking lot, too.
