Present Time
"Stop blowing my phone! I'm not going home any sooner so stop before I block your number." the girl mumbled irritably as she cuts the call. She set her phone on do not disturb and shove her phone in her backpack.
It is bizarre to see a girl in uniform at 10 p.m a time when she would typically be expected to have already returned home. Instead she's on her way to the nearest convenience store to get herself something to eat.
She unwrapped the onigiri she bought and took a seat as she placed her backpack on the table. She took a big bite from her food while it's evident to her face that she's thinking something deep.
Suddenly she got a call from one of her friends. She settled down her food for second and answered the call.
"Mina, your sister just called me, and she's frantically asking where on earth you are," Gaeul said, her voice trembling with concern, the weight of the situation pressing down on her.
Mina feigned indifference, crossing her arms defensively. "What did you tell her, Gaeul?" she inquired, her tone casual, but the flicker of anxiety in her eyes betrayed her nonchalance. Beneath the surface, a profound, gnawing fear gripped her soul, tightening like a vice.
"I told her that I have no idea where you are," Gaeul replied, her brow furrowed with worry, sensing the storm brewing within her friend.
"Ugh, I can't with them!" Mina exclaimed, rolling her eyes dramatically, though the frustration was laced with a hint of desperation. It was a struggle to maintain her facade when all she wanted was to scream.
"I thought you wanted to fix your relationship with your sister? By ignoring her, you're just fueling her anger, you know," Gaeul pressed gently, her voice softer now, trying to reach the part of Mina that still cared.
"I don't care anymore!" Mina snapped, her voice rising, the raw emotion spilling out. "I'm so done with her. I've already put in my part, and yet she never forgave me, as if it's my fault." The hurt in her words was palpable, revealing the deep-seated pain that lingered just beneath her bravado.
Gaeul sighed, her heart aching for her friend. "Yes, but wouldn't it be better for both of you if you were on good terms? You're hurting each other more by holding onto this resentment."
Mina's expression softened for a brief moment, the conflict within her evident. "Maybe," she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper, as the weight of her unresolved feelings hung heavily in the air.
But deep inside, beneath the layers of anger and defiance, a more vulnerable truth resided. Mina could never truly bear the thought of her sister being angry with her; the very idea gnawed at her heart. What she craved, more than anything else, was her sister's love, an unconditional bond that had once defined their relationship.
