The gray sky, with its bright moon adorned by dense clouds casting a shadow on the landscape below, appeared to Jill Cord as a useless will-o'-the-wisp in the darkness. She drove slower and slower along the remote country road, now overrun by rainwater. Her visibility was getting worse in the strong storm, and cautious driving had now become a dangerous challenge under the conditions. She tightly gripped the steering wheel in frustration, causing her knuckles to turn white instantly.
The all-too-familiar melody of the radio station played for the third time that evening, followed by a traffic jam announcement barely discernible as static. Annoyed, she turned off the radio and listened only to the loud rhythm of raindrops hitting the surface of her black Jeep. The cool temperature outside, combined with the malfunctioning heater in her car, sent an unpleasant shiver down the young woman's back. The windshield wipers' capacity proved inadequate to keep up with the increasingly heavy rainfall. The grinding thunder instantly announced the thunderstorm.
Instinctively, Jill veered to the right, planning to pull over at the roadside and wait until the weather improved and the lanes became safer to drive on. But before she could reach the roadside, she abruptly turned into something glowing blue. Before she had the chance to brake suddenly, her Jeep was propelled as if by a non-earthly force, leaping as if it had taken a jump on its own. The frantic shaking of the car caused the young woman's delicate body to sway back and forth, her blonde hair swaying through the air. Green branches and leaves suddenly whipped against the wet windshield of her Jeep. Jill did not initially register the abrupt change in her environment and its vegetation; instead, she had to focus on avoiding all obstacles in front of her. Crazy with reflex, she instinctively jerked the steering wheel to each side to avoid crashing her car into one of the countless trees.
Panicked, she repeatedly pressed the brake pedals, but the car refused to stop as if the fuses had blown. Just as Jill exhaled due to surviving the nightmare so far, the realization that she was about to collide with another tree came too late. Her vision blackened, and she fell into unconsciousness.
Somewhere deep in the jungle, the bright afternoon sun shone on the dense treetops of the tall mammoth trees, creating a greenhouse effect. Lucas Taylor felt sweat instantly dripping down his back as he held his violet Plex module. He wiped the drops forming on his forehead with his forearm as he slowly exhaled.
The Sixers' leader, Mira, and Hooper, an officer of the Phoenix Group, insisted on accompanying Lucas to the location of previously discovered microtime fractures. Lucas considered himself fortunate because, with their rovers, he could reach the destination much faster and avoid being forced to endure the superficial and pointless conversations of his two companions for hours, each of whom had brought five of their men for reinforcement.
Under different circumstances, he would have likely protested their presence and provided reasons why they could not simply march through the dangerous jungle on a whim. During the drive, he mostly thought about his previous failed plans and restructured them to turn his mistakes into cunning opportunities. He knew he would eventually succeed in overthrowing his father from his illusory throne. This time, Lucas did not start writing on a blank page because half of it was already written, containing possible weaknesses and strengths of his approach. This time, he carefully calculated everything, invented various tactics, and even planned to pit his companions and other people against each other. If his father could do it, he could do it much better.
