Melody awoke to the soft glow of morning light filtering through her bedroom curtains, casting a golden hue over her room. She lay still for a moment, listening to the quiet of the house—the familiar sound of her mother moving about downstairs, the distant hum of the kettle boiling for tea. The morning routine was already in motion, but Melody hadn't even moved yet.

She shifted beneath the covers, reaching for the small Bible on her nightstand. It was her habit to start the day with prayer, something her mother had instilled in her since she was little. Melody opened to a well-worn page, but as she closed her eyes to pray, her thoughts wandered—not to the day ahead, not to her family, but to Bella.

Bella.

Her name echoed in Melody's mind like a melody she couldn't shake, and the image of her friend filled her thoughts. The way Bella's hair had fallen across her face when they walked home together yesterday, the sound of her laugh, the warmth in her eyes—everything about her lingered, refusing to fade.

Melody squeezed her eyes shut, trying to refocus on her prayer. She recited the familiar words, thanking God for the blessings of the day, asking for guidance and strength, but Bella's face kept intruding on her thoughts. She could feel her cheeks warm slightly as she remembered the way Bella had looked at her, the easy smile that seemed to make the world around them lighter, simpler.

With a sigh, Melody finished her prayer, closing the Bible and placing it back on the nightstand. She sat up in bed, running a hand through her tangled hair. Why couldn't she stop thinking about Bella? It wasn't like her to be this distracted, especially during her morning prayers.

Shaking off the thoughts, Melody swung her legs out of bed and stood, trying to focus on the tasks ahead. She moved about her room, pulling out clothes for school and grabbing her backpack, but Bella was still there, hovering at the edge of her mind. As she packed her notebooks and checked her schedule for the day, the image of Bella's bright smile refused to leave her.

By the time Melody headed downstairs, the house was fully awake. The scent of breakfast—eggs and toast—wafted from the kitchen, and her mother was humming softly as she worked. Melody greeted her parents with a small smile, but her mind was elsewhere. She ate quickly, barely tasting the food, as thoughts of Bella played on repeat.

"Are you okay, Melody?" her father asked, noticing her distraction.

"Yeah, I'm fine," she replied, shaking her head as if to clear it.

"Just...thinking about school."

Her father nodded, but his concerned expression didn't entirely fade. Melody offered him a reassuring smile before grabbing her bag and heading out the door, her heart already racing in anticipation. She hoped she'd see Bella on the way to school again, just like yesterday.

As she stepped outside, the morning air was crisp, and the sky was painted with soft hues of pink and orange. Melody set off down the sidewalk, the unfamiliar path winding through her neighborhood toward the school. She walked slowly at first, scanning the street ahead, her pulse quickening with every step. And then she saw her.

Bella was up ahead, her figure silhouetted against the early morning light. Her dark hair swayed gently as she walked, her posture relaxed, her steps unhurried. Melody's heart leaped at the sight of her, and before she knew it, her feet were moving faster, carrying her closer to Bella's side.

"Hey!" Melody called out, her voice breaking the quiet of the morning, but Bella didn't seem to hear her. Lost in her own world, Bella walked ahead with her headphones snugly in place, completely absorbed in the music.

Melody quickened her pace, determined to catch up. She ran a few steps, weaving through the morning light, and finally reached Bella, tapping her gently on the shoulder.

Bella turned, a smile spreading across her face as she recognized her friend.

"Hey, Melody! Good morning!" she said, pulling her headphones down to rest around her neck. Melody couldn't help but grin back, relieved to finally get her attention.

"Morning," Melody replied, catching up to her. They fell into step together, the rhythm of their footsteps syncing naturally. Melody hesitated for a moment, unsure of what to say, but the words slipped out anyway.

"Do you always walk this way to school?"

Bella nodded, her expression easy and open. "Yeah, pretty much every day. My house is just a few streets over from yours."

"Maybe we should walk together every day," she said, her tone light but sincere.

"I mean, since we go the same way anyway."

Melody's pulse quickened. The idea of walking with Bella every morning, of having this quiet time together before the chaos of the school day, made her chest feel light, almost giddy. She nodded, a small smile tugging at her lips.

"Yeah, I'd like that."

A silence fell between them, but it wasn't uncomfortable. The soft sounds of their footsteps on the pavement and the distant chirping of birds filled the space around them. Melody found herself stealing glances at Bella as they walked, her mind racing with thoughts she didn't quite know how to explain. It felt easy being with Bella, but it also felt like something more. There was a warmth that spread through her when they were together, a kind of quiet connection that was both new and exciting.

As they approached the school, the building looming just ahead, Melody's nerves kicked in. She wasn't sure why she felt so anxious—it wasn't like this was anything unusual. Friends walked to school together all the time. But there was something about Bella that made Melody feel different, like her world was shifting ever so slightly just by being around her.

The chatter of students filled the air as they neared the entrance, and the morning bustle of school life began to surround them. Melody could hear groups of kids laughing, talking about their plans for the weekend, already caught up in the flow of the day. But she and Bella remained silent, walking side by side, their shared steps in sync.

They reached the doors, and Bella gave Melody a quick smile, her eyes shining.

"I'll see you later?"

"Yeah," Melody replied, her voice soft.

"See you later."

As they parted ways and disappeared into the crowded halls, Melody's mind was still filled with Bella. She couldn't explain it, couldn't fully understand why this one simple walk had made her feel so different, but as she moved through the school day, one thought remained constant: she was already looking forward to tomorrow, to walking with Bella again.
