Silent Longing

Ren stood by the window of his bedroom, the evening sun casting a warm glow over his face. Yet the warmth felt distant compared to the chill in his heart. He watched the world outside, people passing by, laughter echoing in the distance. But within him lay an ache that had become all too familiar.

His thoughts drifted to Mira, the captivating girl who had caught his attention from the first moment he laid eyes on her. She was everything Ren admired: confident, spirited, and beautiful. Yet, deep inside, he felt a longing that he couldn’t ignore—the desire to be with someone who saw him for who he truly was.

At the same time, MJ was always there, his best friend, the one who supported him without question. MJ was the light in Ren’s life, always full of energy, always making him laugh. But Ren was blind to the way MJ’s gaze lingered a moment too long, how his laughter sometimes faltered when Mira was mentioned.

“Hey, Ren! You coming?” MJ’s voice broke through his thoughts, full of energy as he burst into the room, a wide grin on his face.

Ren forced a smile, trying to mask the turmoil within. “Yeah, just… thinking.”

“About what?” MJ plopped down on the bed, his curiosity piqued.

Ren hesitated, the truth sitting heavy on his tongue. But how could he tell MJ that the thought of pursuing Mira filled him with both excitement and dread? Instead, he shrugged. “Nothing important. Just school stuff.”

MJ nodded, seemingly satisfied with the answer. “We should go hang out with the others! It’ll be fun!”

Ren’s heart sank at the thought of pretending, but he couldn’t refuse MJ. He never could. “Sure, let’s go.”

As they walked together, laughter bubbling from MJ’s lips, Ren felt a familiar ache in his heart deepen. They arrived at a nearby café where the rest of F4 were already gathered, and as soon as they entered, all eyes turned to MJ, drawn in by his charisma.

Ren took a step back, blending into the background, forcing himself to enjoy the moment. He watched MJ interact with everyone, his laughter ringing out like music. Yet every moment spent watching MJ brought another wave of guilt crashing over him.

Hours passed, filled with laughter and chatter, but as the night wore on, Ren’s attention remained fixed on Mira, who was seated across from him, radiant and lively. The way she laughed, the way her eyes sparkled—it was intoxicating.

But then, he noticed MJ slipping away, his smile dimming as he excused himself to go outside. A pang of concern shot through Ren. He felt a flicker of guilt for being so absorbed in Mira that he hadn’t noticed MJ’s quiet struggle.

“Hey, I’ll be right back,” Ren called out, following MJ outside.

The cool night air hit him as he stepped onto the patio. He found MJ leaning against the railing, staring into the distance, the shadows of the night swallowing him.

“MJ?” Ren approached cautiously, concern etched on his face. “Are you okay?”

MJ turned, his expression a mix of emotions—hurt, longing, and a hint of sadness. “Yeah, just needed some air.”

Ren’s heart sank as he recognized the pain in MJ’s eyes. “You seemed off tonight. Was it something I said?”

MJ shook his head, but Ren could see the truth behind the denial. “It’s nothing. I just… I’m happy for you, Ren. Really.”

“Happy for me?” Ren echoed, confused. “What do you mean?”

“About Mira,” MJ replied, forcing a smile that didn’t reach his eyes. “You really like her, don’t you?”

Ren nodded, a smile spreading across his face. “Yeah, she’s amazing. I think there’s something there.”

MJ’s expression fell, the mask slipping away. “That’s great, Ren. I just hope you’re happy.”

“Of course I am!” Ren insisted, but the way MJ looked away made him realize the weight of his words. “But you don’t have to pretend to be okay. I know you’re my best friend, and I care about you. If something’s bothering you, you can tell me.”

MJ looked back at him, and for a moment, Ren thought he saw the glimmer of tears in his eyes. “It’s just hard sometimes, you know? Watching you chase after someone else when…” He trailed off, his voice choked with emotion.

“MJ, I—” Ren started, but the words caught in his throat. He didn’t know what to say, how to comfort his friend when he was the cause of the pain.

“Just forget it, okay? I’m happy for you. I just need to get used to it,” MJ said quickly, wiping his eyes and forcing a smile again. “Let’s go back inside.”

As they walked back, Ren felt the distance between them grow, a chasm filled with unspoken words and hidden feelings. He wanted to reach out, to comfort MJ, but he felt paralyzed, caught in a web of emotions he couldn’t untangle.

In the shadows of his heart, Ren sensed that this was just the beginning of a long, painful journey, and he was terrified of where it would lead them both.
