The days turned into a blur for Ren as he navigated his feelings for Mira while watching MJ's quiet suffering from the sidelines. He found himself spending more time with Mira, captivated by her laughter and charm, but every shared moment was laced with an undeniable tension.

MJ remained a constant presence, his support unwavering despite the emotional strain. He hid his feelings well, but Ren noticed the subtle changes—the way MJ’s smiles didn’t reach his eyes anymore, how he would glance away whenever Ren mentioned Mira. It made Ren's heart ache, the guilt gnawing at him, but he pushed those thoughts aside. He didn’t want to burden MJ with his own romantic pursuits.

One afternoon, Ren, Mira, and MJ were studying together at a café. Mira’s laughter filled the air as she teased Ren about a mistake he made in their assignment. Ren was fully engaged, reveling in her attention and basking in the warmth of her smile. But each time he glanced at MJ, he found his friend silently watching, a shadow of sadness lurking in his eyes.

“Come on, Ren! Focus!” Mira laughed, nudging him playfully. “You’re supposed to be my study partner, not my distraction!”

Ren chuckled, the lightness in the air momentarily lifting his spirits. “Sorry! I’ll try to pay more attention.”

MJ, who had been doodling in his notebook, looked up, forcing a smile. “Yeah, focus on Mira, Ren. She’s the real star here.”

The words stung more than Ren anticipated. “MJ, you’re great too. You always help us with everything,” he replied, attempting to lighten the mood.

MJ nodded, but his eyes betrayed the facade, flickering with an emotion Ren couldn’t quite place.

After their study session, Mira suggested they go for ice cream. Ren agreed without hesitation, eager to spend more time with her. As they walked to the ice cream shop, Ren found himself lost in conversation with Mira, her laughter ringing in his ears. But in the background, he felt MJ’s silence, a weight pressing down on him, reminding him of the unacknowledged pain simmering beneath the surface.

When they arrived at the ice cream shop, Mira’s excitement was palpable as she browsed the flavors. Ren watched her with admiration, a smile creeping onto his face. But a glance at MJ revealed him staring at the ground, his expression clouded.

“MJ, you want to pick a flavor?” Ren asked, hoping to pull him into the conversation.

“Uh, I’m good. You guys go ahead,” MJ replied, his voice flat.

Mira raised an eyebrow, sensing the tension. “Are you sure? You love ice cream!”

“Yeah, I’m not really in the mood,” MJ said, forcing a smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes.

Ren felt a pang of concern. “Come on, MJ. Just this once. We can all get our favorites!”

MJ shook his head, his resolve firm. “Really, I’m fine. Just get whatever you want.”

Ren exchanged a worried glance with Mira, who nodded slightly, signaling her own concern. After ordering their ice cream, Ren settled into a seat with Mira, but his heart was heavy as he glanced back at MJ, who remained at the counter, lost in his thoughts.

“Ren,” Mira began, pulling him back to the moment. “You’re really into me, right?”

Ren’s heart raced at her question, the excitement and anxiety mingling within him. “Yeah, of course! I mean, you’re amazing!”

“Good,” Mira smiled, her eyes sparkling. “I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t imagining things. You’re always so focused on me.”

“Of course, I’m focused on you!” Ren replied, grinning. But even as he said it, he couldn’t shake the feeling that someone else was missing.

MJ eventually joined them, his ice cream in hand, but the atmosphere felt heavy. As they sat in silence, Ren noticed MJ pushing his ice cream around in his bowl, the smile on his face faltering. Ren wanted to reach out, to ask what was wrong, but the words caught in his throat.

As they finished their ice cream, Mira excused herself to the restroom, leaving Ren and MJ alone. The silence stretched between them, thick with unspoken words.

“MJ, are you really okay?” Ren finally asked, the concern breaking free. “You’ve seemed… off lately.”

MJ’s eyes flashed with something—hurt, maybe anger. “I told you I’m fine, Ren,” he replied sharply, then softened his voice. “You just have a lot on your mind, and I don’t want to get in the way.”

Ren’s heart sank, the weight of MJ’s words hitting him like a cold wave. “You’re not in the way. You’re my best friend.”

“Then why don’t you see what’s right in front of you?” MJ said, his voice barely above a whisper. “You’re so focused on Mira that you can’t see how much it hurts.”

Ren stared at him, confusion and guilt swirling within him. “What do you mean?”

MJ sighed, frustration evident in his voice. “I mean… I’ve been here, Ren. Supporting you while you chase after someone who isn’t me. And it just hurts, okay?”

The raw honesty in MJ’s words cut through Ren, leaving him momentarily speechless. He had never realized the depth of MJ’s feelings or the weight of the sacrifice he had been making.

“I—MJ, I didn’t know. I thought you were okay with it,” Ren stammered, guilt washing over him.

MJ looked away, tears glistening in his eyes. “It’s not your fault, Ren. But it’s hard to watch you be happy with someone else when all I want is to be with you.”

Ren felt his heart shatter at the confession, the truth hanging heavily in the air. He wanted to reach out, to comfort MJ, but words eluded him. Instead, they stood in silence, the weight of unspoken emotions pressing down on them.
