**Episode 2 - "Mixed Signals"**

---

Alex woke up the next morning, half-expecting to find another unexpected gift outside her door. But the hallway was empty and quiet, just as she liked it. She felt a strange pang of disappointment but quickly shook it off, brushing aside the thought that her new neighbor had, in some small way, gotten under her skin.

She spent her morning at the flower shop, distracted by memories of the previous day-the cactus he'd left, his easygoing grin, the way he'd lingered just a little too long in their brief conversations. She'd told herself that Liam was just another neighbor, one she would avoid once the novelty of his presence wore off. Yet, somehow, he'd left her feeling curious and slightly unsettled.

In a rare moment of spontaneity, she decided to take her book to the park after work, hoping a change of scenery would help her escape her thoughts. She found a quiet bench shaded by a large oak tree and settled in, letting the cool breeze and sound of rustling leaves calm her mind.

She had just started reading when she heard a familiar voice, cheerful and slightly too loud.

"Well, look who it is!"

She looked up, surprised to see Liam strolling down the park path, his camera slung around his neck, looking relaxed and at ease. A part of her wanted to pretend she hadn't heard him, but he was already walking toward her, a bright smile on his face.

"Hi, Liam," she said, unable to keep the hint of irritation from her voice.

He plopped down on the bench beside her, as if they were old friends instead of neighbors who'd barely exchanged a handful of words. "I was just out here taking some photos. The light is perfect today." He gestured to the camera around his neck, as if to explain his presence.

She nodded, trying to seem polite while keeping her responses short. "That's... nice."

Liam glanced at her book, tilting his head to read the title. "What are you reading?"

She hesitated. "It's just a novel. Something relaxing."

He grinned, leaning back with a playful glint in his eye. "You know, Alex, I feel like every time I run into you, you're doing something... peaceful. You must be the calmest person I've ever met."

She laughed softly, surprised by his observation. "I'm not sure if that's a compliment or not."

"It is," he replied earnestly, catching her off guard. "I think it's refreshing. Most people are always rushing around, trying to prove something. But you... you seem happy just being here."

Alex felt her cheeks warm at his words, her usual defenses wavering. "Well, I... I like my routines, I guess."

"Routines," he repeated, as if the word were foreign to him. "I think the only routine I've ever had is making coffee in the morning-and even then, sometimes I forget."

She laughed, the sound surprising her. "I can't imagine living like that. Doesn't it get... chaotic?"

He shrugged, smiling. "Maybe. But that's kind of the fun of it, right? No day is the same."

They sat in comfortable silence for a moment, watching people pass by, the laughter of children filling the park. Alex found herself relaxing, the usual tension she felt around others melting away in Liam's easy presence. It was strange how quickly he'd gotten her to open up, even if only a little.

As they walked back to their apartment complex later, Alex felt lighter, as if she'd let go of something she hadn't even realized she was holding onto. She turned to thank him for the company, but before she could speak, Liam grinned and said, "So... how about that coffee tomorrow?"

She blinked, caught off guard. "I... I don't usually make plans with people I just met."

He raised his hands in mock surrender. "Hey, it's just coffee. No pressure."

For a moment, she considered it. She saw the warmth in his eyes, the sincerity behind his usual charm. But then the familiar caution took over. She barely knew him, and the idea of getting close to someone, of letting them see beyond her carefully maintained walls, was terrifying.

"I'm sorry, Liam," she said softly, looking away. "I'm just... not looking for that kind of connection right now."

She expected him to be hurt or disappointed, but instead, he just nodded, his smile never faltering. "No problem, Alex. Just coffee. But if you ever change your mind..." He gave her a wink, backing toward his door.

Once he was gone, Alex stood in the hallway, a strange sense of regret twisting in her chest. She hadn't wanted to hurt his feelings, but she didn't know how else to protect herself. People like Liam-they were like a storm, sweeping through your life, leaving everything messy and out of place. And she wasn't sure she could handle that.

The next morning, Alex stepped outside her door, bracing herself for another awkward run-in with Liam. But the hallway was empty. She let out a sigh of relief, only to look down and find a small paper cup of coffee sitting on her doormat, with a note scribbled on the side: *"One coffee, just as neighbors. -Liam"*

Her heart softened, a reluctant smile pulling at her lips. He hadn't taken her rejection personally. Instead, he'd found a way to respect her boundaries while still showing that he cared. It was thoughtful in a way she hadn't expected from him.

Taking the cup inside, she sat by the window, sipping the coffee and watching the early morning light spill across the street. She felt the slightest hint of warmth blooming in her chest, a reminder that maybe, just maybe, letting people in wasn't always a bad thing.

---

Throughout the day, Alex couldn't stop thinking about him. She told herself it was silly, that he was just a neighbor who'd made a kind gesture, but deep down, she knew it was more than that. Liam had slipped past her walls with a gentle ease that left her both frustrated and exhilarated.

As she returned home that evening, she hesitated outside his door, debating whether to knock and thank him for the coffee. But before she could make a decision, her door swung open, and there he was, standing in the hallway with his usual grin.

"Hey, neighbor," he said, his voice warm and inviting.

"Hey," she replied, suddenly feeling shy.

They stood there in silence, neither quite sure what to say, until he finally spoke. "I know you said no to the coffee, but... if you ever want to talk, just as friends, I'm here. Sometimes it's nice to have someone who listens."

Alex felt a strange sense of calm settle over her. For the first time, she wasn't afraid of the connection growing between them. She nodded, a small smile tugging at the corners of her lips. "Maybe," she said quietly. "Maybe I'll take you up on that sometime."

His face lit up, and he gave a playful salute. "I'll be waiting, neighbor."

As she closed her door, Alex felt a quiet thrill running through her veins. Maybe Liam Carter was exactly the kind of chaos she needed in her perfectly ordered life.
