I blinked as a warm, bright beam of sunlight shone through the window onto my face. I sat up wearily and went to the window. Hearing a few birds outside, I opened the window and looked out. A large bird was approaching from a distance. Confused, I squinted my eyes and realized it was an owl. An owl in the daytime? The owl landed on the windowsill next to me. Confused, I stared at it. It was carrying a letter in its beak and carefully placed it next to me. "There...Thank you?" I stammered. The owl immediately fluttered in and grabbed a biscuit that was still on my table. I opened the letter and two sheets of paper fell out. I unfolded the first one and began to read:
Dear Miss Nyla Silverbrook,
We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Enclosed you will find a list of all the books and equipment you will need. The school year begins on September 1st. We expect your owl by July 20th at the latest. Since you are a Muggle-born witch, information about the new school will be coming later today.Kind regards
Minerva Mc Gonagall Deputy HeadmistressI showed the letter to my parents, who were of course completely surprised. Later, the doorbell rang and an old woman, who later turned out to be Miss Mc Gonagall, gave me the necessary information that I and my parents were still missing.
The next day we drove to London. Mum had told me that the wizarding street was called "Diagon Alley". But as an ordinary person you couldn't just get there, you had to use magic.
Since I was a witch, my parents were allowed to come with us. We parked the car in London. First we had to find a place called "The Leaky Cauldron". It was a dingy, rather old-looking pub. When we entered, I didn't see anything at first,
but then I gradually made out something. An innkeeper was standing behind a counter and grinning at everyone in a friendly way.
"Muggle-borns for Diagon Alley, eh?" he said. My parents nodded, I had to cough at first because it was pretty smoky. The innkeeper led us into a small back courtyard where there were barrels and started knocking stones off with his wand. These now began to shift and a gate formed. When my parents and I had gone through, I saw shops standing close together. I was amazed. Wow, that was really...
Magical. My mother now pulled out the piece of paper with the things I needed for Hogwarts. "First we'll find the wizard bank and change our money there!" she looked up. "That way!" In the wizard bank called Gringotts, they had their money changed by goblins. I was relieved when we could go outside again. The goblins hadn't exactly looked friendly. First, my parents and I went to Flourish & Blotts to buy my new school books, then to Madame Malkins for the school robes. To be honest, it was pretty stupid that they all had to be black, because I would have liked a lime green one. In Elyop's owl department store, I got a pygmy owl called Nyx. She was quite small and chirped happily to herself. I stroked her beak. "How are you, sweetie?" I laughed. She was really too cute. After we had bought the other important items (cauldron, scales, . . .)
the most exciting thing came: the wand!
As my parents were out on the street talking to other Muggle parents, I had to go to Ollivander's alone. The store was kind of spooky. Huge shelves towered up the walls. "Ah... Miss Silverbrook... what can I do for you?" I turned around. There was an old man standing at the counter. "I need a wand," I replied, forcing a smile.
That must have been Mr. Ollivander. Ollivander now pressed a wand into my hand. "Oak, 12 inches, phoenix feather, please wave it through the air once." I grabbed the wand and waved it. The chandelier, which hung from the ceiling and looked as if it had last been used for the opening of the shop, was swinging dangerously back and forth. I looked up worriedly. I could do without a dust bomb flying down on us.
"It's not that one, at any rate,"
mumbled Mr. Ollivander. "Try this one." I took the wand and waved it gently back and forth. A warm feeling flowed through my arm and golden sparks rained down on both of them. "That's it! Birch, 11 1/2 inches, unicorn hair." I nodded, pleased to have found my wand after such a short time. Hopefully I could finally leave this shop now. Ollivander packed the wand in a box and handed it to me. I paid and then left the shop.
Once outside again, I had to blink because the sunlight suddenly seemed much brighter. No wonder, it had been pitch black in Ollivander's shop too. I spotted my parents and ran to them to show them my wand. The polished wood shone like gold in the light. Now I left Diagon Alley with Mum and Dad, fully loaded with school things, and packed them into the car. Then we drove home. Now Hogwarts could start at any time!
