1864, Mystic Falls
The Founder's Council party was the biggest event of the year in the small town called Mystic Falls, home of the confederates. It was a local stop most known for its profitable cotton plantations and the fact it dominated much of what made Virginia lucrative. The Lockwood estates presided much behind the success of Mystic Fall's trade, not short following behind the Salvatore's, specifically Giuseppe Salvatore, one of the most affluent and well known planters among a few other Foundlings.
People from all across the state traveled far and wide to attend the event, and some even hailed from all across the country completely. Which also meant eligible bachelors would be there and just coming-of-age young women, entreating to scrounge for their future endowment in the form of a ring. The event altogether entailed promise of business for the Salvatore's, and promotion to expand the Founder's council across states. There would even be piles and piles of all the finest decadent three-course meals, enough to feed a whole army. It was the event you saved up your whole year's allowance on for a lavish gown you'll probably not wear again because where else would you wear it? And it was the event one everyone had their dancing cards completely filled out, the night dragged out all the way until the early morning.
In short, the party was to be the most extravagant event of the season and showcased a different theme every year. It was an event one would never want to miss.
But none of that was what truly thrilled Charlie. No, rather, it was the prospect of her brother Damon Salvatore returning home from Camp Russell infantry. She had not seen him well within a year, and only received a letter every so often, if she was lucky to ever receive one within a month. It was difficult with the ongoing war, and Charlie always dreaded the absence of his missives, for fear Damon may never return again. That was why he made a promise, that every year, he would come home to visit at least once, and it just so happened, it was always around the time of the Founder's party.
Charlie loved a good party. In fact, she loved it even more because Lawrence Lockwood would be there.
For over well of a year, Charlie had started to accumulate feelings for the boy, and considering their families were close and they often visited each other, it came as no surprise one should fall for the other. George Lockwood and Giuseppe Salvatore even placed wagers on how long it would be until the two engaged. The date of course was already set by the families. It was just a matter of time for when Lawrence should work up the courage to finally ask Charlie's hand in marriage.
Of course, Charlie and Lawrence were made aware of this, but Charlie had a tendency to avoid any talk of marriage, or permanency in general. She had a strong case of commitment issues, regarding a ring on her finger, anyways.
