Danny barely slept that night, his mind racing with scenarios of how Equinox might respond. Every step they'd taken so far had been meticulous, but he knew they were playing with fire—and the inferno was closing in.The first rays of morning filtered through the blinds, casting a dim light across the safehouse's living room, where Danny, Nate, and Alex had gathered. The air was thick with anticipation as they went over their plan one last time. They knew today was their chance to act; waiting any longer would be suicide. They would make their move, releasing just enough of the evidence to rattle Equinox and protect themselves by making any harm against them look suspicious.
Alex's voice broke the silence. "So, we're sticking with the same plan? Release a sample to the media, let Equinox know we have more, and force their hand?"
Danny nodded. "We give them a taste. Enough to make them back off. And if they don't... we go public with everything. Every last detail."
Nate, seated with his laptop, pulled up a secured messaging system, ready to distribute the first set of files. "I'll send these through anonymous channels to a few key journalists. They're trustworthy, the kind who can smell a story but won't act recklessly. This should get Equinox's attention."
Danny and Alex exchanged a final look, the unspoken understanding that this could be their last move hanging in the air. They were stepping into uncharted territory, challenging forces with the power to make people disappear without a trace.
"All right, do it," Danny said, feeling the weight of his words.
Nate hit 'send,' and the files began transmitting. For a few moments, the room was silent, the hum of the laptop the only sound as they watched the progress bar inch forward. Finally, a notification popped up on Nate's screen. Transfer complete.
They all exhaled, the tension in the room thick enough to cut.
Danny's phone buzzed almost immediately, startling them all. He glanced at the screen—another message from the unknown number:
You've been warned, Walker.
Danny showed it to Nate and Alex, their faces hardening.
"It's a scare tactic," Nate said, though his voice wavered slightly. "They're trying to rattle us."
Just then, Alex's phone buzzed too. He frowned, looking down. It was an alert from his bank—a transaction he hadn't authorized.
"They're digging into my accounts," he said, his voice low. "It's a signal. They're showing us they know who we are, where we live, what we own."
Danny clenched his fists, fighting the urge to lash out. "Let them dig. We're past the point of intimidation."
The trio braced themselves for what came next, knowing they had little time before Equinox retaliated. Just as they began discussing contingency plans, there was a loud knock on the door. They all froze, exchanging tense glances.
Nate's face paled. "Did you invite anyone?"
"No," Danny replied, his voice barely a whisper. He motioned for them to stay back as he moved toward the door, his hand hovering over the lock. He took a deep breath, then opened it a crack.
Standing in the doorway was a woman in a dark suit, her expression unreadable. She held up a badge, her voice calm but authoritative.
"Mr. Walker, I'm Agent Sarah Hayes with the FBI. We need to talk."
Danny let her in, motioning for Nate and Alex to stay put. Agent Hayes scanned the room with a practiced eye, her gaze settling on the laptop on the table and the stack of files beside it. Danny could feel the weight of her scrutiny as she assessed the situation.
