Snapping back a can of ice cold cola, I stretch back in my sun lounger. The glittering Caribbean sea is just a few metres away, crystal clear as each gentle wave laps onto shore.
"Ahh...." I sigh dreamily. "This is the life."
"Is it?" A familiar voice cuts through the air. "Because frankly, working ten tedious hours a day in a cluttered, overheated supermarket doesn't sound or feel particularly enjoyable to me."
It's as if my tropical surroundings are stripped away, right back to reality. Which happens to be me lying back on an uncomfortable plastic chair behind the checkout, pretending to drink a coke that I snatched from the shelf.
"Oh Nadia," I sigh, yet again. Sighing is just part of my everyday life now. "I can't help it. I can feel the warm wind....I can see the ocean, so blue and clear," I ramble poetically.
"And let's hope you can see that customer," Nadia interrupts.
An elderly man looks down at me, tapping his foot impatiently.
"Oh, right! Sorry sir."
I sit upright in the chair and begin to scan his items, one by one, just like always. Nadia was right. Sliding plastic pouches underneath a beeping red light all day doesn't sound like 'the life.'
"Would you like a bag?" I ask him.
"Oh, no, I think I'll just carry this week's shopping on my toes," he replies sarcastically.
"I'll take that as a yes then," I mumble, snapping a thin plastic bag off the rail.
You never know what kind of people you'll meet here. From groups of gossiping teenagers just looking to spend all their money on junk food, to hectic collage students who buy the same thing every day- a bottle of fruit flavoured water and a sandwhich- to snarky old men who take pleasure in making rude comments towards young girls just trying to do their jobs.
That last one was rather specific.

Karlie
General FictionI'm Karlie. Am I clumsy? Well. They don't call me Karlie the Klutz for nothing. But that's irrelevant. What is relevant is that I like to daydream. A lot. And never in my wildest daydreams did I ever think that one could come true.
