The sun had barely risen when Chika arrived at her office the next morning, a chill still clinging to the air from her encounter with Hikaru. The faint scent of smoke seemed to linger in her nostrils, a reminder of the boy's tragic fate. She brewed herself a fresh cup of coffee, hoping the warmth would help shake the feeling of dread creeping into her thoughts.
As she sipped her coffee, the morning light streamed through the window, casting elongated shadows that danced across the floor. Just as she set her mug down, a light knock echoed through her office door. It creaked open to reveal Asami, her new coworker, a stack of files cradled in her arms.
"Morning, Chika! I brought breakfast," Asami announced, stepping in and revealing a bag of pastries. "I thought we could fuel up before diving into the case."
Chika smiled, grateful for the gesture. "You're a lifesaver, Asami. I could use the energy."
As they shared the pastries, Chika couldn't shake the feeling that the events surrounding Hikaru's death were far from over. She glanced at the files spread out on her desk, filled with notes from her previous research on the Yoshida family. They had once been a symbol of success and privilege in the city, but now they were shrouded in grief and suspicion.
After breakfast, Chika laid out her plan. "Let's head over to the local library. I want to dig into any historical records we can find on the Yoshida family. There might be something there that can help us understand why this happened."
Asami nodded, her brow furrowed in concentration. "That makes sense. There could be a connection we haven't uncovered yet."
At the Library
The library was a labyrinth of bookshelves, each filled with tales of the past. The scent of aged paper hung in the air, and the soft rustle of pages turned created a calming backdrop as they searched for clues. Chika was drawn to the section that housed local history, while Asami navigated the archives with practiced ease.
After an hour of poring over old newspapers and records, Asami called out, excitement lacing her voice. "Chika, you need to see this!"
Chika hurried over to find Asami holding a fragile newspaper clipping. The headline read: "Yoshida Mansion: A Legacy of Wealth and Tragedy." The article detailed not only the rise of the Yoshida family but also a series of unfortunate events that had befallen them over the decades, including mysterious accidents and untimely deaths.
"There's a pattern here," Chika murmured, scanning the article. "It mentions several fires over the years, always in the mansion, and always resulting in losses for the family. But it doesn't explain why."
"Or who might be responsible," Asami added, her eyes narrowing as she studied the text.
Chika's thoughts raced. "What if this wasn't just a tragic accident? What if someone has been targeting them all along?"
Suddenly, a shiver coursed through her, and she could almost hear Hikaru's voice echoing in her mind, urging her to look deeper. "Let's check the archives for any police reports or statements from the family after each incident," she suggested. "Maybe there's something in their reactions that could lead us to answers."
Asami nodded, leading the way to a computer station where they could access digital records. They spent the next few hours sifting through police reports and eyewitness accounts, piecing together a timeline of events.
"Look at this," Asami pointed to a report detailing a fire that had occurred ten years prior. "It mentions that the family was out of town at the time, but there was a caretaker in the house. They reported seeing strange shadows near the mansion on the night of the fire."
