PARADISE THE LOST sat her three girls one night on the bed of the eldest. It was night time at Trisda, the waves crashed slowly against the white shores, the moon spelled the waves into their back and forth movement.

Donatella, the youngest, wasn't sleepy at all. And instead wanted to play pirates like she had done with her sisters earlier that day.

Scarlet, the eldest, wanted to hear a story from their mother that took them ever further than the Meridian Empire ( if there was even such a place ). A story that would enchant her young heart into dreaming of true love that night.

Beatrice, the middle daughter, laid her head on her mother's lap, spreading her dark coils of hair on her silky skirt. Their mother massaged her scalp, making Beatrice's eyelids flutter.

Paradise asked them what they wanted to be when they were older, and typical of their young age, they answered with whatever idea they had- as extraordinary or complicated it could sound.

Scarlet wanted to be a queen, she would be just and kind. Under her rule the kingdom would blossom into a place of peace and light.

Donatella poked her tongue at Scarlet, and said she would rather be a pirate. She would roam the seven seas and live loads of wonderful adventures every day, she would not have a house to call home- but instead it would be the thrill of the new day and the people she would do it with.

Half into the land of dreams, Beatrice answered drowsily she would like to be a fairy.

Magic was something shiny and exciting for the three girls, a far-away concept that didn't seem tangible. Fairies were magical- and Beatrice Dragna wasn't magical.

Nonetheless she continued; she would flutter from flower to flower, guide birds to their nests, paint the wings of butterflies and frolic in nature all day.

At night time she would go near the windows of children and protect their dreams. And she would only sleep whenever she desired, no bed-time limit! She could watch all the sunrises she wanted.

Their mother assured all of their dream- queen, pirate, fairy- whatever they wanted to be they could. As magical or complicated it could be.

Their father listened from the door with a soft smile, he came to his wife and pressed a kiss on her cheek, earning a chorus of eww from the girls.

Paradise tucked the three girls into their beds, pressed a kiss on their forehead and then gave them another kiss just because her girls asked.

That night Beatrice woke up from a deep slumber, something had tugged her from a field of lilies ( in which, naturally, she was a fairy ). Drowsily, she made her way to the shores in front of their big house.

Her mother wore a brown cloak- Beatrice had never seen her mother wear such clothes- something that wasn't a summer dress.

"Mom?" Beatrice rubbed her eyes. "What are you doing here?"

Her mother turned around, her eyebrows etched but her lips tightened into a smile. "It's late Tiger," like the tigerlily flower, their favourite flower. "Go back to bed, Bee."

Beatrice stepped closer, "but... what are those clothes? Tella will love them! They look so adventurous."

Her mother laughed, "c'mere, give me a big hug."

The younger girl didn't hesitate and sunk her feet into the sand, running towards her mom with childish glee.

"Go back to sleep, it's late."

Beatrice's feet dangled, as she hugged her mother tight. "Do you think we can buy strawberries tomorrow at the market? The cook..."

Her mother nodded, "of course we can." She set her on the sand again. "But off to bed again." She grinned. "Chop chop."

Unbeknownst to Beatrice, Paradise the Lost had slipped into her pijamas a golden locket.

And when the morning came; Paradise was gone ( the islanders would say dead ) and life in Trisda had changed forever.
