The next morning, I was the first one awake. The others were still snoring away, but I couldn't help myself—I had to look out the window. Outside, it was misty and drizzling, just like usual around here. My gaze swept over the dunes and jagged rocks, when suddenly... there it was! A flash on the horizon. "Shit!" I blurted out loud. I spun around—the others were still lying in their beds. No time to lose.
"Hey, wake up!" I shouted, shaking Tim's and Jonas's beds. Tim mumbled something, while Jonas squinted at me, confused. "What's up, man?"
"Out there! There's a flashing light! If that's a ship and it doesn't see us..." That was all I needed to say. Jonas was instantly wide awake. "Damn, the beacon!"
We took off, sprinting barefoot over the cold floor to the small concrete dome where we could light the signal fire. Jonas rummaged frantically in a box on the wall and pulled out a lighter. "Come on, come on!"
He lit the wood, and within seconds, flames were crackling to life. We all let out a sigh of relief as we stared at the fire.
"Whew, just in time!" Jonas said, sounding as relieved as I felt.
"Yeah, a bit longer, and they definitely would've missed us. Hopefully, this is enough," I replied, looking out into the distance.
"If not, I'm gonna be in trouble with my parents," Jonas muttered with a grin.
"Oh, me too," I said, and we all laughed—but deep down, we felt the thrill.
