I do work for my dads buisness, advertisements and promotional stuff, be it presentations, documents, photos, videos, mock ups, 3D models, you name it.
I was regarded as a sort of skunkworks within the company, if someone had some idea for a new website feature or way of advertising or idea in general, i was normally on it.
Because of this i learned a lot of skills, both for working in real life and on the computer, everything from writing to 3D design, this night i'd received an order to produce some mock ups of an idea for a new ad campaign.
It was to show products floating in a zero g enviroment, i don't know how much it costs to hire a vomit comet but i was fairly sure that was out of the question, we decided that a simulation was the best bet for a few seconds of the ad.
That night i'd manage to knock up a prototype within an hour, it was a simple simulation, but the last part was the part i'd dreaded, rendering.
For those who don't know, rendering is a process that turns your 3D model into a finished picture, it's a hard task that without a special computer, can take hours and make your computer unusable in the process, i'd previously had a deal to use a server in the office, which worked great as it was one i could never dream of affording, but one day i entered the office to be greeted by firefighters and a fire alarm going off, the server had exploded which set off the fire alarm, good job i had backups, it was a cheap ten minute fix, but the server was on some sort of contract so they had to pay for a whole new one, from that moment, i wasn't allowed to use the office server again.
My computer actually wasn't bad, it could produce the simple scenes we needed in 20 minutes to an hour, but to make matters worse, this was a video, a few seconds of 60 fps video resulting in a total of 480 pictures which would need to be rendered.
It was 2 AM and the simulation had been rendering for almost 4 hours, and i'd estimated at an average of 15 minutes per picture, it was going to be a week until i could unveil the mock up.
I was in bed doing some mindless scrolling, my computer had been made unusable by the rendering so i was stuck with my phone, outside it was like the greyest cloud you could imagine had descended, so much fog i couldn't see a thing outside.
I think at about 2:10 AM a strange notification popped up on my phone
Wi-Fi Network 'Totally Not Dodgy :)' Connected
Odd, i thought, was i hacked? before i could check the settings, the page refreshed and displayed a single message.
'Look Outside :)'
I thought for a second i had seen something shine through the curtains, i peeked out the window and saw what looked like tens of torches in the fog, swinging around, some crossed paths, it seemed like they were searching for something.
I retreated from the window, past the computer that was working away, i picked up the phone with the intent of calling the police non-emergency number but found no service, i'd heard something about fog being able to block out phone signals and thought it was just that.
