Walking into the gym, I held a few snacks I'd grabbed from the concession stand for Amir, who'd told me he was hungry. My eyes scanned court side landing on Mariah, who had Amir comfortably perched on her lap.
Breah was sitting next to her, both of them deep in conversation.
We were back in Memphis, here to watch Daedae play in his first college game. The gym was alive with energy, fans buzzing, and both teams warming up on the court. My gaze drifted to Daedae, who was standing at the center of the court, in the middle of an interview.
Seeing him out there in his uniform, I couldn't help but feel a huge surge of pride. My boy was something special, and tonight he was about to prove it to everyone, once again.
The Oregon Ducks were the competition, and I knew this game would be a big test for him. But I had no doubt he was ready for the spotlight.
I settled into the seat next to Mariah, casually draping my arm along the back of her chair.
She didn't look my way, keeping her attention on Amir as he happily munched on his cookies.
She was still giving me the cold shoulder.
I let out a quiet sigh, hoping maybe my presence beside her would break some of the ice.
Out on the court, Daedae was finishing up his interview, glancing over in our direction.
"You good?" I asked, trying to break the silence.
Mariah gave a small nod, barely glancing in my direction, her focus still on Amir.
Daedae came over, his energy high as he walked up to us. He dapped me up, then leaned down to give Mariah a hug.
"You good, ma?" he asked, looking at her with that familiar, caring expression. I watched her, seeing a genuine smile cross her face as she nodded.
"Of course! I can't wait to see you play!" she replied, her tone filled with pride and excitement.
Daedae grinned, giving Amir a quick high-five before looking back at us. "Appreciate y'all being here. I'm gonna put on a show."
"Already know you will," I said, patting him on the shoulder.
Daedae grinned and reached down, lifting Amir out of Mariah's lap. "Come on, Mir, let's show these folks some skills," he said, giving Amir a playful bounce as he held him.
