WORMS 'N DIRT

THE LAST TIME MATTEO HAD BEEN ON A FIELD TRIP, HE ENDED UP GETTING SENT HOME EARLY.

It had been a trip to watch the live action version of Macbeth for his English class, and he'd gotten lucky enough that year to have a few friends enrolled in the section with him. They were too loud, too rowdy in the very back of the theatre they were gathered in.

After one too many warnings, Matteo and two other boys had their parents called in order to pick them up. Maybe that was when he noticed Renée's blatant favouritism for his sister start up, or perhaps it had been an earlier event that triggered it. Safe to say, she wasn't thrilled to leave work in order to get his ass from across town.

Yeah, he didn't have the best track record with stuff like this, but although it wasn't mandatory, going on this particular field trip would boost him miserable grade by a whopping two percent. He needed to be on one of the buses that began pulling in front of the school, hence why he was stood next to his sister with a permission slip in hand.

Both twins were silent for two very different reasons. Bella was recounting what had happened just the day before, with the screeching of the tired and the whole Edward thing playing on loop in her mind. Matteo, on the other hand, was trying to come up with ideas on how to not fuck this up. All three biology sections would be in attendance, so the chances of him blending in were already much higher than usual.

Their individual ploys were disrupted by the face of Mike Newton, the blond all but jogging right up to Bella. "Look at you, huh? You're alive!" he cheered, the sound too loud in Matteo's ears.

Bella played it off. "Yeah, I am. False alarm, I guess."

Matteo's jaw rolled, knowing how it almost hadn't been a false alarm. As his eyes began to sweep over the parking lot of arriving students, eager to tune out anything and everything the other boy was saying, he locked eyes on the person who'd held him back yesterday.

Like he sensed Matteo's eyes on him, Jasper Hale met his gaze head on. The Swan boy didn't really know what to do other than nod in his direction, even though they were across the lot. Jasper nodded back, the corner of his lip quirking up just the slightest. An unspoken exchange.

Thanks.

You're welcome.

"... do you wanna go to prom with me?"

Matteo's head whipped towards the sound of the Newton's boys voice, unsure if he was hearing his words correctly. Though, it seemed his sister hadn't either, given the confusion on her face. "Sorry, what?"

"Do you want to go? To prom?" he asked once again, before tacking on a small chuckle, "with me?"

Matteo, from his place not even a foot away, switched his gaze between the two like a damn spectator in a tennis match. It was obvious to anyone with eyes, or really, anyone that wasn't Bella, that Mike had a crush on the brunette, but to see him try and act on it.

Honestly, Matteo had to give the guy props.

"Prom," Bella laughed, though it came out nervous. "Dancing. Not such a good idea for me... I have something that weekend anyway."

Matteo looked at her from the corner of his eye, pretending to study the final bus that rolled into the lot. "Oh, you do?" Mike asked, obviously wanting to know more.

"Yeah, we're going to Jacksonville that weekend?" Bella responded, and it took a lot of strength for Matteo to not ask any follow up questions. It was a lie, one Mike was oblivious to, but the eldest twin was an even better liar than she was.
